Hampi: Ancient ruins, hidden gems, and my unforgettable adventure!
Hey there, fellow travellers! Today, I want to take you on a captivating journey through the mesmerising ancient ruins of Hampi. As an avid explorer and history enthusiast, I've had the pleasure of immersing myself in this UNESCO World Heritage Site. Get ready to uncover the secrets of this extraordinary destination as I share my personal experiences and tried and tested itinerary with you.
Upon arriving in Hampi, I couldn't help but be awestruck by the breathtaking landscape that unfolded before my eyes—the vast expanse of boulder-strewn hills and the remnants of an ancient kingdom made for an enchanting atmosphere. Start your adventure by exploring the Virupaksha Temple, dedicated to Lord Shiva. As I stepped into this ancient marvel, I was amazed by the intricate carvings and the spiritual aura that surrounded me. Remember to look out for the temple elephant, Lakshmi, who blesses visitors with her trunk! Later, I made my way to the iconic Vittala Temple, famous for its awe-inspiring stone chariot and enchanting musical pillars. Exploring the temple's intricate craftsmanship was a delight, and I couldn't resist tapping on the musical pillars to hear the melodious sounds they produced. It felt like the stones were singing! Trivia: Did you know that the stone chariot in Vittala Temple is considered a marvel of ancient engineering? Its wheels could rotate at one point in time!
To start my second day in Hampi, I decided to take a peaceful boat ride across the Tungabhadra River. The gentle breeze and serene surroundings provided the perfect respite from the bustling historical sites. As we drifted along the river, our boatman shared intriguing stories of the past, bringing the rich history of Hampi to life. Next, I headed to the majestic Queen's Bath, a bathing complex used by the royal family during the Vijayanagara Empire. Walking through the arched corridors and admiring the well-preserved architecture, I couldn't help but imagine the grandeur of the era. It was a truly captivating experience that transported me back in time. For a dose of natural beauty, I visited the nearby Tungabhadra Dam. Not only does this engineering marvel provide irrigation to the surrounding areas, but it also offers a picturesque view of the reservoir and the lush greenery. Taking a leisurely stroll along the dam and witnessing the sunset over the water was a memorable moment too. Insider Tip: If you're visiting during the monsoon season, don't miss the opportunity to witness the mesmerising sight of water gushing out of the dam's gates!
On my final day in Hampi, I decided to explore some lesser-known gems that often get overshadowed by famous landmarks. One such place was the Underground Shiva Temple or Prasanna Virupaksha Temple—a hidden treasure nestled amidst a cave complex. As I descended into the depths, I was captivated by the dimly lit chambers and the spiritual aura surrounding the lingam, a symbol of Lord Shiva. Exploring this offbeat location filled me with a sense of adventure and the exhiliration of discovering something unique. Another hidden gem I stumbled upon was Sanapur Lake. Surrounded by stunning rock formations, this serene lake is the perfect spot for relaxation and rejuvenation. I spent a few hours here, basking in the tranquillity and taking in the awe-inspiring views of the surrounding landscape. As I sat by Sanapur Lake, I couldn't help but appreciate the peace and serenity that enveloped me. It was a moment of pure bliss, away from the crowds and tourist hotspots. The stillness of the lake, juxtaposed with the towering rocks, created a surreal atmosphere. I marvelled at how such hidden treasures exist, waiting to be discovered by those willing to venture off the beaten path.
To add an extra dash of adventure to my itinerary, I decided to try rock climbing in Hampi. With its unique landscape dotted with massive boulders, Hampi is a rock climber's paradise. I joined a guided climbing tour and was amazed at the thrill of scaling the rocks, challenging myself physically and mentally. The sense of accomplishment, as I reached the summit and took in the breathtaking panoramic views, was indescribable. Trivia: Hampi is often referred to as the "Bouldering Capital of India" due to its exceptional rock formations, and attracts climbers from around the world. Apart from the awe-inspiring historical sites, Hampi is also renowned for its vibrant local markets. I couldn't resist exploring Hampi Bazaar, where local artisans showcased their traditional crafts and unique souvenirs. From intricately designed jewellery to handwoven textiles, there was a treasure trove of cultural artefacts waiting to be discovered. Engaging in conversations with the artisans provided valuable insights into their craftsmanship and the rich heritage of the region. It was the ideal way to conclude my exploration of Hampi and reflect upon the incredible journey I had embarked upon.
Hampi, with its rich historical heritage and mystical ambience, offers a truly unique travel experience. As I wrapped up my journey through this ancient wonderland, I couldn't help but feel a deep sense of appreciation for the hidden gems and lesser-explored sites that make Hampi even more enchanting. Before bidding adieu to this extraordinary destination, I urge you to try something truly special—witness the sunrise from the top of Matanga Hill. As I climbed the hill in the early morning hours, the anticipation grew within me.
