Known for its picturesque landscapes and high rainfall, Cherrapunji offers an ideal setting for group camping. Trekking through lush forests and discovering living root bridges that have stood the test of time was going to be an experience of a lifetime. We were all agog with excitement as we set forth into the dense rainforest. To reach the famous Umshiang Double-Decker Root Bridge, we trekked through picturesque landscapes, moss-covered stones and steep steps. This extraordinary bridge is formed by guiding the roots of ancient rubber fig trees across a stream.
The Umshiang Double-Decker Root Bridge in Meghalaya, crafted by the skilled Khasi tribe, offered a unique opportunity to witness the harmony between humans and nature. Walking across this living bridge, surrounded by nature's symphony, was a truly magical experience and showcased the incredible skills and resourcefulness of the local community. It is a symbol of sustainable engineering and the harmonious coexistence between humans and the environment, making it a must-visit destination for nature enthusiasts and adventure seekers. Insider Tip: Make sure to carry waterproof gear and wear either closed-toe shoes or trekking sandals with good traction, as the trails can get muddy and slippery owing to the region's abundant rainfall.
Named Asia's cleanest village, Mawlynnong is a hidden gem tucked away in the Khasi Hills. This picturesque village offers a serene and eco-friendly camping experience for groups. As we woke up to the melodious chirping of birds, we took relaxed walks along bamboo pathways and marvelled at the well-maintained gardens and colourful flower beds. We engaged with the welcoming locals and learnt about sustainable practices and community initiatives. Group Camping in Mawlynnong gave us an opportunity to witness and learn a lot from the locals' commitment to preserving their environment. It also instilled in us a sense of responsibility and inspired us towards sustainable habits. Insider Tip: Try the local delicacies and savour the flavours of Meghalaya's authentic cuisine, such as Jadoh (rice and meat dish) and Nakham Bitchi (fermented fish chutney).
The crystal-clear waters of the Umngot River in Dawki provided an enchanting camping destination. This was an idyllic setting for groups seeking to be one with nature and enjoy the natural beauty of the tranquil surroundings. We set up camp near the river bank, surrounded by lush greenery and the majestic Jaintia Hills. The boat ride on the river was a priceless opportunity to see the riverbed's clarity. We felt as if we were floating on a glass surface. The crystal-clear waters and surrounding hills create an atmosphere conducive to reflection, self-discovery, and deepening connections with fellow campers. Insider Tip: Plan your visit during the winter months of November to February for the best weather and clearer river waters.
For an offbeat camping experience, we ventured into the village of Nongriat, accessible through a thrilling trek from Tyrna village. The trek took us to the famous Double-Decker and Single-Decker Living Root Bridges. We spent a couple of days exploring the nearby waterfalls, such as the Rainbow Falls and Nohkalikai Falls, and relaxed in the serene ambience of the village. Insider Tip: The trek to Nongriat involves steep stairs, so ensure you have sturdy footwear and are physically prepared for the journey.
