Exploring the Treasures of Kanha National Park: Beyond Tigers and Wildlife

Discover diverse wildlife, breathtaking landscapes, and immersive activities at Kanha National Park – an unrivalled destination for nature enthusiasts.

I've always been fascinated by wildlife, so when I had the opportunity to visit Kanha National Park, I seized the opportunity to visit this haven for nature enthusiasts. Kanha National Park beckons adventurers to uncover nature's treasures alongside their travel companions. The park boasts a rich variety of wildlife, including tigers, leopards, sloth bears, and elephants. In addition, the park harbours a sizeable population of birds, reptiles, and amphibians. A visit to Kanha National Park offers an exciting range of activities, including jeep safaris, elephant safaris, trekking, and birdwatching.

The best time to visit Kanha National Park is during the winter months, spanning from November to February. I booked a group travel package that included accommodation at Tathastu Kanha, a resort conveniently located within the national park. The resort provides all modern amenities, including a swimming pool and spa. It also serves as a good base for exploring several exciting hiking trails. While there, I also had the opportunity to embark on a night safari, which proved to be an incredible experience. Among other resorts within the park are Banjaar Tola, Kanha Jungle Lodge, and Singinawa Jungle Camp. Stay at one of these resorts for a mesmerising experience in the lap of nature.

Elephant safari

Compared to other activities, an elephant safari presents a more immersive way to witness the park's wildlife. When you ride atop an elephant, you are not only able to enjoy a close-up view of the wild residents of the park but also observe them in their natural habitat. Note that the safaris begin early in the morning when the animals are most active. So, remember to set an early alarm and avoid eating spicy or oily food the night before. An elephant safari also offers the opportunity to catch sight of tigers. Remember that tigers are solitary animals, which means you may only catch fleeting glimpses of them. Nonetheless, it is a phenomenal experience to see these majestic creatures in their untamed surroundings. If you do plan to embark on an elephant safari, it is good to keep in mind some of these common tips. Firstly, opt for comfortable clothes and shoes that enable easy movement; sports shoes are an ideal choice. Secondly, carry an adequate supply of insect repellent and sunscreen. Finally, maintain your patience and show respect towards the animals. Be sure to listen to the guidance and instructions provided by your guide.

Trekking

There are several trekking trails in the park that you can explore. Here are a few of the popular ones: Mukki: This trail is perfect for families and offers a relatively easy trekking experience. Covering a distance of 5 km, the trail takes around 3 hours to complete. The course is well-maintained and marked, ensuring ease of navigation. As you traverse this path, you will see a diverse variety of trees, including sal, bamboo, and teak. If you are lucky, you may even spot a tiger or a leopard. Kisli: Measuring 3 km in length, the Kisli trekking trail can be completed within 1.5 hours. This short and leisurely trail offers plenty of opportunities to spot the park's avifauna.

Birdwatching

Kanha National Park is a haven for birdwatching enthusiasts. It harbours a diversity of bird species, including many that are rare or endangered. Some of the most popular bird species you will be able to see in Kanha National Park include the Great Indian hornbill, peacock, Oriental honeybee-eater (bee-eater), black-headed oriole, and kingfisher. To make the most of birdwatching opportunities, plan your visit to the national park during the monsoon season, from June to September. During this period, the birds are highly active, and the park showcases a greater variety of avian species. Kanha National Park is also a paradise for photographers. The best time for capturing wildlife is early morning or late evening when the animals are more active and the light is softer.

Top tips

Given the unpredictable weather in Kanha National Park, it is advisable to pack a waterproof jacket. Additionally, having a first-aid kit is always a wise precautionary measure. If you are planning to embark on a night safari, a flashlight becomes an essential item to carry. And of course, don't forget to pack a pair of binoculars to enhance your wildlife viewing experience. For those interested in photography, carry a telephoto lens to capture close-up shots of the animals. This will allow you to capture the details of their fur, stripes, or markings. As an avid photographer, I usually take a set of four lenses in my camera bag, along with two tripods to ensure I'm ready to capture shots.
