Nagpur's Orange Festival

Did you know that Nagpur is known as India's 'Orange City'? That's because it produces some of the juiciest and sweetest oranges you'll ever taste! And to celebrate this delicious fruit, the city hosts the Orange Festival.

During the festival, you can indulge in a variety of dishes made with Nagpur oranges. I gorged on the Orange Barfi, Orange Rasgulla and Orange Jalebi. These incredibly flavorful dishes are made with the perfect sweetness of the oranges.

You can even attend cooking workshops where local chefs teach you how to use Nagpur oranges in different dishes. How intriguing!

Interested in learning more about the history and cultivation of Nagpur oranges, I took a guided tour of the orange orchards. Here I understood how the fruit is processed. It was a unique experience. You don't want to miss it.

Kolhapur's Food Festival

Have you ever tasted the spicy and flavorful cuisine from Kolhapur, Maharashtra? If not, this festival is a great opportunity to experience it!

At the festival, you can find some of the most famous dishes in the region. The Kolhapuri Tambda Rassa is a spicy red curry made with mutton, and the Kolhapuri Pandhra Rassa is a white curry made with chicken or mutton. Both these dishes are known to be explosions of flavour.

If you're visiting this festival, you must not miss the popular Kolhapuri Misal. It is a spicy sprouts curry served with bread and is a staple breakfast dish in Kolhapur. If you're a fan of spicy food, you definitely can't miss the Kolhapuri Lavangi Chicken. This one is a spicy dish flavoured with the Kolhapuri Lavangi chilli.

From my experience, the festival also offers a variety of vegetarian options. Start with the Kolhapuri Bhadang. This is a spicy puffed rice snack. Also, look out for the Sabudana Vada, a crispy fritter made with tapioca pearls.

Mumbai Street Food Festival

The Mumbai street food festival is a celebration of the city's vibrant food culture, offering a wide variety of iconic street food with unique flavors and spices. Some must-try dishes include Vada Pav, Pav Bhaji, and Bhel Puri. And I ate all of them!

Vada Pav is a popular street food snack consisting of a deep-fried potato dumpling in a bread roll. Pav Bhaji is a vegetable curry served with a soft bread roll. Bhel Puri consists of puffed rice, vegetables, and chutneys.

The festival also features food competitions and cooking workshops, making it an exciting event for food lovers. The most well-known Mumbai street food festival is organised by the Maharashtra Tourism Development Corporation (MTDC) and takes place every year in January at the MMRDA Grounds in Bandra-Kurla Complex. The festival attracts thousands of visitors from all over the country to indulge in Mumbai's famous street food.

Sula Festival, Nashik

The Sula Fest is one of India's most prominent music and wine events. It takes place every year in Nashik, Maharashtra, at the beautiful Sula Vineyards. It combines wine, music, food, and culture. People from all over the world come to attend the festival each year.

Here you can taste some of the best wines from different wineries in the region. All the wine-tasting sessions are led by experts. The exceptional wines have rich, complex flavours reflecting the region's unique terroir. Some popular wines you can taste include Chenin Blanc, Sauvignon Blanc, and Shiraz.

In addition to the wine, the festival also offers a variety of food from different parts of the country. You can also witness cultural events that showcase the region's rich history and culture. There are live music performances by both Indian and international artists.

Ganesh Chaturthi

This one is not exactly a food festival. But what religious festival is complete without food?

Ganesh Chaturthi is one of the biggest and most exciting festivals in Maharashtra! The festival is a celebration of Lord Ganesha, who is highly revered in Hindu mythology as the god of wisdom and prosperity.

Here you can try some traditional Maharashtrian dishes. Start with the Puran Poli, a sweet flatbread stuffed with lentils and jaggery. Next on your menu should be the Modak, a sweet dumpling filled with coconut and jaggery. This one is my favourite: the Ukadiche Modak, a steamed dumpling made with rice flour and stuffed with coconut and jaggery.

You can also witness the grand processions and immerse yourself in the festive spirit.

Marathwada Food Festival

This annual festival takes place in the region's cultural capital, Aurangabad. It features a variety of local dishes that are all a must-try.

For instance, the traditional Naan Khaliya is a slow-cooked mutton dish that's super delicious. A delicacy from Nagpur, the spicy Saoji Chicken is sure to set your taste buds on fire. My favourites on the menu are the Masala Bhaat, a spicy rice dish, and the Kolhapuri Misal, a spicy sprouts curry served with bread.

Apart from the food, the festival also offers visitors the chance to learn about the region's culture and traditions.

In conclusion, Maharashtra is a paradise for food lovers. From the spicy Kolhapuri cuisine to the juicy Nagpur oranges, the Mumbai street food to the wine tasting at Sula Fest, there is something for everyone.

These food festivals are not only about food. They also offer cultural events, competitions, and cooking workshops. So, if you're a foodie looking for delicious and unique experiences, these food festivals in Maharashtra are a must-visit.
