How to Spend the Perfect Vacation in the Andaman Islands

Experience the beauty of the Andaman Islands with this insider’s guide.

Ah, the Andaman Islands! With their turquoise waters, white sand beaches, and lush green forests, the islands are the perfect escape from the hustle and bustle of city life. From solo trippers to the ones vacationing with family or friends, the Andamans cater to all types of travellers. As someone who has had the pleasure of visiting these islands, let me let you in on a few suggestions on how to spend the perfect vacation here. I promise to also throw in some fun experiences as well, to help you have a memorable trip. First things first, you'll need to fly to Port Blair, the capital city of the Andaman Islands—it is the fastest and most preferred way to reach the Islands. From there, you can either take a ferry or a seaplane to get to the other islands. The choice is yours. I opted for the seaplane, which was an adventure in itself. You will get a bird's-eye view of the islands from the plane. I could see the clear water and coral reefs beneath. The experience was surreal and I knew it was just the beginning of an amazing experience.  Once you've landed on one of the islands, you can begin exploring. The people here were very warm and friendly. They greeted me with a smile and I felt like I was a part of the community, if only for a short while. If you ask me, the best way to explore a place is by getting acquainted with the locals. They have many stories and experiences to share, only if you care to listen.

Fun in the water

When you think of the Andamans, the first thing that pops into your mind is scuba diving and snorkelling. The Andaman Islands are home to some of the most beautiful coral reefs in the world, and the marine life is simply breathtaking. I went snorkelling off Havelock Island and saw everything from schools of colourful fish to majestic sea turtles. I could relate to what Hrithik Roshan felt after his first sea dive in the movie Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara. Would it be too much to say that in just one dive, all of life's secrets were revealed to me? If you want to see marine life up close and don’t mind something more adventurous, you can try your hand at sea walking. It's exactly what it sounds like–you walk on the ocean floor. You need to put on a helmet with a built-in oxygen supply. It might sound daunting, but it's quite easy and a lot of fun.

The Andaman Islands are famous for their pristine beaches and for good reason. Radhanagar Beach on Havelock Island was voted the best beach in Asia by TIME magazine, and it's not hard to see why. The water is crystal clear and the sand is soft and white. It was one of the best beaches I visited. I spent hours lounging on the beach, reading a book and sipping on fresh coconut water. I never wanted to leave. Being one of the best beaches, it is mostly crowded. So, if you're looking for a secluded getaway, you can take a short boat ride to Elephant Beach. It's a little harder to get to, but it's worth it. The beach is surrounded by lush forests, and the water is so clear that you can see all the way to the bottom. Plus, there's coral reef just a short swim away, so you can snorkel as much as you like.

Hikes and sightseeing

Need a break from the water activities? Explore the forests of the Andaman Islands. There are a lot of hiking trails that will take you through dense jungles and up to stunning viewpoints. Hike to the top of Mount Harriet on Ross Island and get a panoramic view of the mighty Andaman Sea. It is a challenging hike, but trust me, the views are worth it. If you're a history buff like me, then the Cellular Jail in Port Blair is a must-visit. This infamous prison was used by the British to imprison Indian Freedom Fighters during the colonial era. The jail has been turned into a museum. You should take the guided tour to learn about the history of the Andaman Islands and the Indian independence movement. The Andaman Islands are known for their unique blend of cultures. For thousands of years, they have been inhabited by indigenous tribes. Their culture and traditions are still alive. The easiest and most fun way to explore the islands is on a bike, which can be easily rented. But keep one thing in mind—the roads are a bit bumpy and unpredictable.

Loving my way through the stomach

The Andaman Islands are a melting pot of different cultures. This fact is reflected very much in their cuisine. From fresh seafood to Indian curries to Chinese stir-fries, you can find everything here. But I suggest you try the seafood—you will lose your mind once you realise how fresh and delicious it is!  One of my favourite experiences was visiting a local fishing village on Neil Island. You won’t believe what I got to see. I watched the fishermen bring in their daily catch and then have it cooked right in front of me. The crab curry was simply divine. With just the right spice level and a rich creamy curry, it made my taste buds dance with joy. But if seafood isn't your thing, don't worry—there are plenty of other options. The Indian food on the islands is some of the best I've ever had, especially the flavourful and aromatic curries paired with pillowy soft naan. Also, don't forget to try out the fresh fruit salad and the smoothie bowl, which are a perfect way to start your day.  For those of you who are bored of Goa (which I highly doubt), you need to hit the Andaman Islands. The stunning beaches, clear waters, and tropical forests make for a getaway of a lifetime. Whether you're looking for adventure, relaxation, or a little bit of both, these gorgeous Islands have something for everyone. Don’t forget to create some Insta-worthy moments while you are at it. Thanks to its unique blend of cultures and friendly locals, the Anadamn Islands is a destination that will stay with you, long after you've left.
