Umaid Bhawan Palace, Jodhpur

Perched on Chittar Hill, Umaid Bhawan Palace is the royal residence of Jodhpur's family. A part of the palace has been transformed into a heritage hotel, boasting majestic domes, Art Deco-style rooms, a lavish dining experience, and rejuvenating spa massages.

From the start, I was treated like royalty by the courteous staff, and my room, with stunning views of the Blue city, Mehrangarh Fort, and Baradari Lawns, only served to enhance the experience. Exploring the palace felt like a dream as I immersed myself in its captivating architecture and imagined the lives of the former royals.

Engaging in various royal activities was a highlight, from trying my hand at Rajasthani art with skilled artisans to enjoying an enthralling vintage car ride through the sprawling grounds. Magical evenings unfolded with Rajasthani music under the starlit sky, complemented by a delightful feast of authentic Rajasthani cuisine, making the experience unforgettable.

The price per night for two: Upwards of Rs. 34,400.

Oberoi Udaivilas, Udaipur

As I stepped through the ornate gates of Oberoi Udaivilas, Udaipur, the sight of the majestic Lake Pichola stretched out before me.

The palace was constructed on the hunting grounds of the Maharana of Mewar. Every wall of the palace resonates with intricate 20th-century art deco interiors, bracketed windows, meticulously crafted sculptured pillars, marble friezes and magnificent arches and balconies.

The palace-turned-hotel features Mewari architecture, big courtyards, fine-dining restaurants, fountains, gardens and pools. Almost half the property is a designated wildlife sanctuary. My room had a garden with a patio, a private infinity-edge pool, and excellent views of Lake Pichola, the Aravalli Hills, and the City Palace. During my stay, I enjoyed a soothing massage at the spa and a private yoga session. I even tried my hand at cooking, learned miniature painting, participated in a Thekri workshop, and went on heritage walks.

The vibrant culture of Udaipur, exploring the narrow lanes of the old city, haggling at bustling markets, and witnessing traditional dance performances were experiences that brought the city's rich heritage to life.

The palace's splendour, the impeccable hospitality of the staff, and the tranquil beauty of Lake Pichola made it a truly unforgettable experience. As I bid farewell, I knew that a part of my heart would forever remain at this magnificent palace by the lake.

Mihir Garh, Rohet

Based on a friend's enthusiastic recommendation, I planned a stay at Mihir Garh Rohet. Against the backdrop of the Thar Desert, Mihir Garh sits on a six-metre-high sand dune—the highest point in the area—and offers great views of the open desert. Mihir Garh has nine suites that span over 1,700 sq. ft., with private terraces, plunge pools, a personal mini-bar, a fireplace to warm the wintry nights, spa treatments and a choice of traditional and continental cuisine.

The Mihir Garh Village Safari provided a rare opportunity to explore the customs and crafts of the local people. Interacting with the Bishnois, Raikas, Paliwals, and Meghwals provided insights into their way of life. I enjoyed the Royal Picnic, which was an extension of the safari. The Shikar Dinners were a unique culinary experience, featuring camel cart rides, illuminated paths, and a cozy bonfire under the night sky. The evening ended with captivating folk performances, delicious kebabs, and a starlit dinner. I also took part in a culinary workshop to learn Rajasthani cuisine and enjoyed the demos and partaking in my own creations.

This is definitely an experience that I want to revisit.

Rambagh Palace, Jaipur

With its Indo-Saracenic architecture, hand-carved marble jaalis or latticework, cupolas, royal Mughal gardens, chhatris and sandstone balustrades, Rambagh Palace is a classic example of Rajput heritage and tradition. The rooms offer garden and courtyard views along with state-of-the-art amenities that ensure a regal experience, while the restaurants treat you to a royal feast.

The hotel is also home to a cafe serving a multi-cuisine menu and a couple of bars where you can enjoy a drink. Enjoy a relaxing massage at the Jiva Grande Spa or go on heritage walks to explore the palace and learn about its glorious past.

Six Senses Fort Barwara, Ranthambore

Six Senses Fort Barwara evoked the regal allure reminiscent of 14th-century Rajasthan. Within its premises stand two magnificent palaces, accompanied by two temples, a library, a boutique, and a spa. You can also indulge in the sumptuous offerings of its fine dining establishments that present a culinary experience fit for royalty. The rooms are thoughtfully adorned in contemporary Rajasthani aesthetics, seamlessly blending modern amenities and timeless splendour. Adorned with panoramic vistas of Barwara Lake, the majestic Aravallis, and the surrounding lush forest, the rooms offer a truly breathtaking vista.

I went on a hike in the morning, which was later followed by an exhilirating safari to Ranthambore National Park. Witnessing the sun setting over the Aravallis was a magical experience. The temples within the fort are worth visiting too. I also went on a walk to the nearby villages, where I learned quite a bit about the local culture and lifestyle.

The price per night for two adults: Upwards of Rs. 40,083.
