Central Market

Central Market is nestled right in the heart of the coastal city. It is one of the prominent markets in Mangalore. The market is always bustling with activity. One piece of advice – hone your bargaining skills before you hit the market. You may end up paying way more than the actual price of items if you go with the quoted price.

Central Market has many shops selling fashion and lifestyle products. You will also find shops selling poultry, fruits, spices, ayurvedic medicines, and vegetables. You will get the best quality cashews here. I bought cashews and some lifestyle products from Central Market.

Roaming around the streets here and shopping helped me gain insight into the culture and lifestyle of the locals

  • When to Visit: The market is open from 5.00 a.m. to 8.30 p.m. However, early morning is the best time to visit if you wish to pick up fresh produce.

  • What to Buy: Fashion and lifestyle products, fruits, spices, vegetables, poultry, and ayurvedic medicines.

Hampankatta Market

Hampankatta Market is a busy place throughout the day. Do you like to pick up quirky objects from roadside shops? You are in for a treat! This is also a great place to experience the local culture.

The market is located in one of the oldest corners of the city. It still retains the old-world charm. This is what makes Hampankatta Market a major hotspot in Mangalore.

Milagres Store here can be considered the one-stop shop for all your requirements. You can go to the shop straight away if you are short of time. Taj Mahal Sweet Shop is your go-to place if you have a sweet tooth. Their Mysore Pak will simply melt in your mouth. I still remember the aroma of the Mysore Pak from there.

  • When to Visit: The market is open from 5.00 a.m. to 9.00 p.m. However, individual shops may follow their schedules.

  • What to Buy: Authentic Mysore Pak, quirky items, and many more.

I am sure your hometown has a mall or two. Trust me, City Centre Mall in Mangalore will be a completely different experience. The mall covers an area of over 8,50,000 sq. ft. It houses some prominent retail brands to appease the shopaholic in you.

They offer great discounts on premium brands like Westside, Lifestyle and Max. The mall attracts an average footfall of 20,000 per day. I wasn’t surprised. Neither will you be! The mall also has a multiplex and food court.

The bustling Badangupet Market serves enthusiastic shoppers like no other place. Do you love jewellery? Then this place is worth visiting. I bought a few pieces of jewellery from here. Seafood Market

It is quite apparent that seafood is the highlight of this coastal city. Here you will find varieties of prawns, crabs, oysters, squids, lobsters and fresh-water fishes. Empire Mall

Empire Mall is one of the busiest malls in Mangalore. It is located in the centre of the city and attracts huge footfall, especially during the weekends. Empire Mall is smaller compared with other malls in the city.

However, the mall houses some of the top brands. This includes Heavenly Rose, Nilgiris Supermarket, and Raymond’s Fun Factory. The mall also has a food court to appeal to tired and hungry shoppers.

Panambur Beach

Have you ever shopped at beach shacks? If not, I recommend you start with Panambur Beach. When I went to the beach, my only plan was to enjoy the beauty of this place. However, during a leisurely walk on the beach, a few shops caught my eye. I couldn't resist buying those beautiful seashell crafts.

Emye’s Seashell Crafts is a prominent shop selling some colourful and quirky home decor items. Their prices are reasonable too! If you love traditional handicrafts, you can buy a few pieces as souvenirs from here.

  • When to Visit: Most of the shops here are open in the evenings.
