Originally known as Hauj-e-Qutub, Kankaria Lake was constructed in the 15th century by Sultan Qutb-ud-Din Ahmad Shah II. It was used by the royal family and nobles for bathing, washing, and irrigation and served as a venue for cultural and recreational events, such as musical concerts, poetry recitals, dance performances, and fireworks displays. Over the years, the lake has undergone various transformations and in 2008, it was turned into a modern waterfront, attracting visitors from across the country.
Kankaria Lake is open for visitors throughout the week. Occasionally, Mondays are closed for minor repairs and maintenance. The lake timings are as follows:
For the Lakefront, the entry fee is Rs. 25 per person for adults, Rs. 10 per person for children (below 12 years), and free for differently abled people and senior citizens. For viewing the attractions, the entry fee is between Rs. 10 to Rs. 100 per person depending on the attraction. Lastly, you can enjoy the activities for Rs. 50 to Rs. 300 per person depending on the activity.
Best time to visit: The best time to visit Kankaria Lake is from November to February as the air around the lake is cooler and tourists are able to enjoy the activities better.Kankaria Lake Boat Ride: The Kankaria Lake Boat Ride is one of the main attractions at the lake offering a variety of options for its visitors. Situated within the Kankaria Lake complex, you can find different boat ride services here ranging from leisurely pedal boats to exciting speedboats. Operating hours for the boat rides are typically from 9 AM to 10 PM, with ticket counters conveniently located near the embarkation points. The boat rides provide a scenic view of the lake, including the central island, Nagina Wadi.
Kankaria Zoo: The Kamla Nehru Zoological Garden is one of largest zoos in India and occupies 31 acres of land. It is home to a wide variety of reptiles, mammals, and birds. The park was established in 1951 by Rueben David, a Padma Shree awardee. The park is open between 9.00 AM to 6.00 PM every day and it is situated near Kankaria Lakefront Gate no 4 & Atal Express Station.
Tree Walk: If you are a fan of activities that get your adrenaline rush, then you will love the tree walk activity at Kankaria Lake. You will be attached to a support harness as you complete a single, double or full loop across the woodland. You can enjoy a variety of flora and fauna on your way to this activity. The timing for tree walk is between 10.00 AM to 10.00 PM and it is located near Kankaria Lakefront Gate No.2
Kankaria Carnival: Every year, there is a carnival hosted for a week at the Kankaria lake in Ahmedabad. This is a 75-minute-long audiovisual festival based on 'Ame Utsav Premi Amdavadi' theme, involving more than 100 artists.
Mini Train: The Kankari Lakefront Park, also boasts of a cute little toy train named Atal Express. This toy train can carry up to 150 passengers, including 36 adults. The Atal Express runs on a 2.3 km track circling the entire lake and is truly a one-time experience.
Butterfly Park: The Butterfly Park at Kankaria Lakefront is a must-visit for anyone intrigued by the vibrant and delicate world of butterflies. Spanning across 800 square kilometers this park is a specially designed habitat that showcases a wide variety of these captivating insects. This place is placed within the One Tree Hill Garden, and people visit this place to explore educational exhibits featuring pictures and models of different butterfly species.
Stone Mural Park: Gurjar Gaurav Gatha located at the Kankaria Riverfront is India's largest stone mural park. This unique park features sculptures that narrate the rich history of Ahmedabad. One of the key attractions of this place is that it is spread over 3,150 square foot mural and still under consideration. It is anticipated that once completed it will be the largest of its kind worldwide. The murals cover a range of themes, including the folklore and history of Ahmedabad, notable rulers of Gujarat, trade and commerce traditions, education, the freedom struggle, cultural heritage, and expressions of art and literature.

Kankaria Lake is about 3 km from Maninagar Railway Station, 5 km from Ahmedabad Railway Station and 8 km from Ahmedabad Airport. You can reach Kankaria Lake through the following options:
Auto/ Local transport: You can hire an auto-rickshaw from any part of the city to Kankaria Lake, The fare varies around Rs. 50 to Rs. 100 depending on the distance and traffic.
Taxi: Taxis are another convenient option, and you can pay around Rs. 200 to Rs. 500 depending on the distance and traffic.
Metro: The nearest metro station is Apparel Park Metro Station, which is about 2 km from the Lake. The metro fare is around Rs. 10 to Rs. 20 depending on the distance.
Bus: The Kankaria Lake Bus Stop is quite close to the main entrance of the lakefront. The bus fare varies between Rs. 10 to Rs. 20 depending on the distance.
Sabarmati Ashram: Located about 7 km from Kankaria Lake, Sabarmati Ashram is one of the most important historical places of India. Once the residence of Mahatma Gandhi, the ashram served as the center of India's nonviolent freedom struggle.Today, visitors can explore the museum and view Gandhi's living quarters, gaining insight into his life and philosophy.
Jama Masjid: At just 4 km from Kankaria Lake, Jama Masjid is an excellent example of Indo-Islamic architecture. Built in 1424 by Sultan Ahmed Shah, the mosque features intricately carved pillars, spacious courtyards, and an overall sense of grandeur that reflects the city's rich heritage.
Bhadra Fort: Bhadra Fort, is located about 5 km from Kankaria Lake, and is a historic fortress built by Sultan Ahmed Shah in 1411. The fort complex houses beautiful palaces, mosques, and an iconic clock tower. If you’re a history buff, you must pay a visit to Bhadra Fort once in your lifetime.
