Homestays in Alleppey provide travellers with excellent opportunities to immerse in authentic cultural experiences.
As I embarked on my journey to Alleppey, I knew that homestays would offer me an extraordinary opportunity to immerse myself in the local culture. I was eager to experience the authentic charm and traditions of this captivating town. Kerala, often referred to as "God's Own Country", captivates visitors with its awe-inspiring natural beauty, diverse landscapes, and rich cultural heritage. This endearing nickname stems from the belief that Kerala is a land blessed by the divine, adorned with abundant natural wonders. The homestays here enable travellers to immerse themselves in the local culture and traditions. These stays also employ locals and provide them with a sustainable source of income and contribute to the state’s economy. Alleppey, or Alappuzha as it was formally known, beckoned me with its serene backwaters, meandering canals, and picturesque landscapes. There are many choices of homestays, from cosy rustic cottages to beautiful heritage buildings.
After much deliberation, I decided to stay at the Neela Waters Beach Homestay. The home was built in the typical Kerala architecture style with magnificent teak-wood arch windows. The homestay's traditional decor and exquisite woodwork create a captivating visual that is guaranteed to linger in your memory for a long time. Conveniently located a mere 2 km away from the station, Neela Homestay was easily accessible. With only four rooms available for guests, it exuded an intimate and welcoming ambience. The warm-hearted owners, who resided on the ground floor, welcomed me with open arms and became some of the most helpful and hospitable individuals I've had the pleasure of meeting. The room I was staying in was very homely and comfortable. It had all the amenities like a walk-in shower, toiletries, and high-speed WiFi. Waking up every morning to the soothing sound of seagulls near Alleppey Beach, a mere 200 metres away, was an experience I cherished. Neela Homestay is close to various tourist attractions like the Alleppey Lighthouse, St. Sebastian’s Roman Catholic Latin Church, Marari Beach and many ancient temples.
The hosts let me use their bicycles to go around and explore these attractions. I also loved cycling to the nearby villages to experience the rural lifestyle. I visited the local markets to get a glimpse of everyday life. I even purchased traditional handicrafts, spices, and souvenirs. I was at the property for three days. During this time, I went around and thoroughly soaked in some of the local cultural experiences. I went house-boating on the backwaters in a Kettuvallam and enjoyed a ride in a Snake boat. Alleppey is known for its world-famous Snake Boat Race that takes place during the monsoon season. My favourite time at the homestay was in the mornings and evenings. This was when the hosts served mouthwatering—homemade—Kerala-style vegetarian meals. They also served local fruits with each meal. One day, at my request, the lady of the house helped me cook Kootu Curry. This is a typical Malayali vegetarian dish with coconut, black chickpeas, yam and raw plantain. I was overjoyed to add this dish to my repertoire! My hosts also arranged for other cultural experiences like the ancient art dance forms of Kathakali and Mohiniyattam, and the martial art form of Kalarippayattu. I also got sessions on Ayurveda therapy and other local therapies. And to top it all, my stay did not cost me a fortune—the price of the rooms begin at Rs. 2,000 per night. Another homestay in Alleppey that I am keen to try out, and have marked for my next trip, is Vembanad House. Located in Puthankayal, Muhamma, the homestay is spread over an area of 10.5 acres. It is surrounded by the tranquil Vembanad Lake from three sides. On the fourth side, you have paddy fields and old temples. This premium homestay has lots of appeal! It has four bedrooms with a private balcony. All the rooms have exquisite interiors and are well-furnished. Also, they're equipped with all modern conveniences and comforts. The homestay has a beautifully landscaped garden and deck, and serves delicious home-cooked food. The room prices start from Rs. 9,000 (plus taxes) per night, inclusive of breakfast.
