Living Amidst the Big Cats at Tree House Hideaway

Spend a night in a treehouse and wake up to the roar of lions at Tree House Hideaway in Bandhavgarh National Park.

As I entered Bandhavgarh National Park, it felt almost as if I had moved into a world of fantasy. Amidst the domain of approximately 55 tigers, I found solace in Tree House Hideaway, offering a safe and secure environment to witness these majestic cats in their natural habitat. This renowned tiger reserve in Madhya Pradesh derives its name from a captivating legend. According to the tale, "Bandhav" signifies brother, while "garh" refers to the fort. It is said that Lord Ram gifted a fort to his younger brother, Laxman, in this very area.

Residing Amidst the Wild

At Tree House Hideaway, I knew I was in for an extraordinary adventure. This unique eco-lodge offered a rare opportunity and privilege to live amidst the big cats. The Hideaway's location is situated in the heart of a dense forest, creating the perfect haven for these incredible creatures.

Architectural Marvels in Harmony with Nature

The treehouses at Tree House Hideaway are built on stilts, surrounded by lush vegetation. The five treehouses are named after different tree species of trees—Mahua, Tendu, Peepal, Banyan and Palash, paying homage to its natural surroundings. I stayed at the Tendu treehouse, perched high among the branches. It integrates modern amenities seamlessly into the rustic setting and surrounding wilderness with and en suite bathroom, air conditioner, and WiFi. As the morning sun gently filtered through the thick foliage, I woke to the symphony of birds singing in the background. Each treehouse has a telescope, and from my spacious balcony, I made the most of it to get a closer look at the animals in the park. My stomach rumbled in anticipation of breakfast. The dining experience at the Tree House Hideaway is extraordinary, built around a century-old Mahua tree. The regional cuisine, using locally sourced ingredients, was a sensory delight, and each bite was a revelation. After a hearty breakfast, I was ready for the safari to meet the big cats.

Jeep Safari, Cycling, and Nature Walks

Along with a guide, I went on a jeep safari in an open 4x4 Suzuki Jeep, and ventured deep into the heart of the jungle. The luck and thrill of spotting tigers, leopards, and other wild animals up close, with the help of our guide, was an exciting prospect. Back at the lodge, I ventured on a bicycle on an exploration near the lodge. With the guidance of a knowledgeable nature guide, it was a leisurely adventure that allowed me to connect with nature at my own unhurried pace.

Local Culture: Village Visits and Baiga Thali

Experiencing the local culture was enriching. The Tree House Hideaway arranged village visits, where I had the opportunity to interact with the warm-hearted locals and gain insights into their way of life. On request, the lodge provided the Baiga Thali, a traditional meal cooked over chulhas by the women in the village, using a variety of millets. I enjoyed the delicious meal and felt a profound connection with the rich heritage of the region.
