Discovering the Hippie Haven

In September 2022, I moved from Delhi to Parvati Valley, where I spent a fulfilling month. Throughout my stay, I embraced the nomadic spirit, changing my base every 5-6 days, and explored the villages of Katagla, Tosh, Kalga, Pulga, and Grahan. For my stay, I mostly opted for hostel dorms or homestays that were priced between Rs. 300-400 per day. Some of the places I stayed at included Circle Square (Katagla), Whooper’s Hostel (Tosh), Enter the Wild (Kalga), Yolo Backpackers (Pulga), and Ravi Homestay (Grahan). My journey began with hailing a bus from Delhi to Bhuntar, and then another one from Bhuntar to Katagla. Stepping into the lush embrace of Parvati Valley at Katagla, I instantly felt a sense of freedom and liberation. The air was filled with the sweet scent of wildflowers, and the soothing sound of the gurgling Parvati River provided a melodic backdrop to my trip. The valley's laid-back atmosphere and the presence of like-minded souls created an idyllic haven for those seeking an alternative way of life.

Exploring Kasol

My journey commenced in Kasol, a charming village that serves as the gateway to Parvati Valley. As I meandered through the narrow lanes, I was captivated by the vibrant graffiti adorning the walls, the aroma of freshly baked cookies wafting from the local bakeries, and the eclectic mix of shops selling hippie fashion, handmade jewellery, and organic products. Kasol truly embodied the spirit of the hippie lifestyle, offering a haven for creative expression and self-discovery.

Community Spirit and Free-spirited Gatherings

What struck me most about Parvati Valley was the strong sense of community and the abundance of free-spirited gatherings. Everywhere I looked, I encountered individuals who had unique stories to share. From drum circles under star-lit skies to impromptu jam sessions by the riverside, the valley was a melting pot of creativity and spirituality. It was in these moments of connection that I truly felt like I was a part of something bigger.

Yoga and Meditation Retreats

Parvati Valley has emerged as a hub for yoga and meditation enthusiasts, drawing seekers from all corners of the globe. I participated in rejuvenating yoga sessions and attended insightful meditation retreats. Surrounded by pristine nature and guided by experienced instructors, I found inner peace and a renewed sense of purpose. The valley's serene ambience provided the perfect backdrop for self-reflection and introspection. I enjoyed yoga at a venue called Under the Tree in Kasol. Keep in mind that different yoga and meditations camps are organised on weekends; you can always check with the place you're staying at for information on such events. Moreover, keep a look out for posters featuring announcements of upcoming activities.

Hiking to Hidden Waterfalls and Sacred Villages

The natural beauty of Parvati Valley is unparalleled, thanks to its lush forests, cascading waterfalls, and panoramic mountain vistas. I embarked on exhilarating hikes, following secret trails that led me to hidden waterfalls in Kutla, and sacred villages tucked away from the touristy crowd. The sound of the cascading water, the fragrance of the surrounding flora, and the inspiring views from lofty peaks left an indelible mark on my soul. A waterfall that you should consider visiting is the Banjara Falls located near Shani Temple in Kasol. It is a three-tiered waterfall with an interesting climb, aided by the use of tree roots.

Ecstatic Trance at Psychedelic Parties

The nights in Parvati Valley came alive with the pulsating beats of psychedelic music, drawing party-goers and free spirits from far and wide. I surrendered to the hypnotic rhythms, dancing under the starry sky, and immersed myself in the electrifying energy of these gatherings in Chalal. The blend of vibrant lights, surreal art installations, and the openness of the crowd left me feeling exhilarated. To keep track of such events, I would suggest downloading the Party Hunt app on your phone.

Nourishing the Soul with Organic Cuisine

The hippie life in Parvati Valley is not just about spiritual exploration, it is also about nourishing the body and mind. I savoured the wholesome delights of organic cafes and farm-to-table restaurants that dotted the valley. From fresh fruit smoothies and vibrant Buddha bowls to hearty vegan curries and locally sourced herbal teas, every meal was a wholesome experience that fueled my body and delighted my taste buds. The emphasis on organic and sustainable food choices was a testament to the valley's commitment to holistic living and conscious consumption. Mary Jane Restobar and Bhoj Cafe in Kasol are two spots where I had enjoyable meals. At smaller locations, you can always request vegan options at the table.

Leaving Parvati Valley with a Transformed Perspective

Living the hippie life in the hills awakened my senses, expanded my consciousness, and deepened my connection with nature and fellow travellers. My trip to Parvati Valley highlighted the beauty of simplicity, the power of community, and the importance of embracing an authentic, alternate way of life. I returned home with a transformed perspective, carrying the essence of the valley's hippie spirit in my heart, and a renewed commitment to living a life filled with freedom, authenticity, and connection.
