Lollapalooza Mumbai: India's First Edition Was Full Of Colours, Cuisines, and Class Acts!

With more than 60,000 attendees in its debut edition, Lollapalooza India is set to make a comeback in 2024!

Soon after Lollapalooza Chicago ended, India was announced as the eighth and the next destination for the biggest multi-genre music festival in Asia. All the music lovers in India screamed their lungs out!

Lollapalooza is one of the biggest music festivals around the world. It is a non-stop two or three-day getaway for music lovers to lose themselves in good vibes, great food, and drinks!

The festival was started in 1991, but it wasn’t until 2005 that this festival gained popularity in America. Soon after, it started travelling around the world and marked its foreign foray in Santiago, Chile in 2011.

Over the years, the festival has made appearances in cities in Brazil, Argentina and France. This year, it finally made its Indian debut!

The First Impression of Lollapalooza India

Being a music enthusiast, I had my heart set on Lollapalooza India 2023, one of the world's biggest music festivals. I couldn’t wait for the line-up to be announced in September. I got my hands on early bird tickets for INR 7,000! I was excited to attend the first-ever edition of the massive Lolla India 2023!

While many fans were hoping for mainstream artists like J-Hope, Dua Lipa, and Miley Cyrus to show up for the fans, the line-up didn’t include any of them! The line-up attracted a lot of appreciation from the early birds. Fans of K-pop were relieved because we knew Jackson alone will make the show worth it!

I have been a fan of Jackson and Cigarettes After Sex for a long time. I was excited to attend the two-day event that was held in Mahalaxmi Race Course, Mumbai, on January 28 and 29.

So, how was it?

In a single word, it was so much better than all the criticism that came it's way!

The decoration was top-notch and covered every inch of the 50-acre venue. It was dotted with art installations, food stalls, a Ferris wheel, and four big stages with state-of-the-art speakers and musical equipment!

There was free drinking water available on every corner. The bars were overcrowded and for good reason! There was a wide variety of drinks available. The food stalls offered everything from fancy dishes to street food. All we had to do was recharge our wristbands with QR codes to buy food and drinks, on both days.

Lollapalooza India: Day 1

By the time I reached Mahalaxmi Race Course, it was already 3 pm. One of my favourite bands, The Yellow Diary, was performing. I caught a glimpse of the performance and I have to say, it was spectacular!

The line-up on the first day included artists like Kasablanca, Chelsea Cutler, AP Dhillon, Japanese Breakfast and Greta Van Fleet. The highlight of day one was the headliners, Imagine Dragons. The band's lead singer, Dan Reynolds, choked up when the crowd sang the band’s popular songs with him.

Dan didn’t expect such a huge fan following of Imagine Dragons in India. He promised to come back to the country. This is exactly why we need more live music festivals here! Also, let’s not forget how he tossed out his T-shirt and flaunted his abs while singing hit singles like Bones, Demons, and Kryptonite! I have to say they stole the show.

The music event received a lot of hate, but it wasn't all bad! Although, it could have been organised better. It was a challenge to walk back to the exit gate, and find a cab as I remained stuck at the venue for more than an hour or so since no cabs were available! However, now that I look back at that night, it seemed kind of fun to walk to the nearest cafe with my girlfriends and wait for a taxi for the next hour.

Lollapalooza India: Day 2

Day 2 finally saw Jackson Wang perform. In my opinion, Wang should have headlined the event, instead of The Strokes. Some other popular performances that happened on day 2 included Cigarettes After Sex, another favourite, Divine, Prateek Kuhad, Diplo, Siri, Adya, The Wombats, and Raveena!

By the time I reached Jackson’s stage, the area was already crowded. Somehow, I fought for my life to reach close to the stage. His performance was to begin at 7:30 pm, and the minute his name flashed on the big screen, fans went crazy!

It was also no surprise that people standing in the front were getting squished from the back. There were a few altercations before the performance but once the show started, we all lost our senses – the Magic Man had entered the stage! To say that Jackson’s performance was electrifying would be an understatement.

Wang is a Hong Kong rapper, singer, record producer, fashion designer, entrepreneur, and dancer. He was a sabre fencer and preparing for the 2012 London Olympics, when he was offered to join Got7, a popular South Korean idol group, and debuted in 2014. Since then, his popularity has only grown—not just in Korea and China, but across the world.

The performance ended with Jackson thanking his fans for waiting so long to see their idol and that, he would be back soon!

The show ended with Diplo playing several dance numbers. By the end of the event, more than 60,000 people had attended the first-ever edition of Lollapalooza India!

Lollapalooza India 2024 Edition!

The thumping success of Lollapalooza India 2023 means that the festival will travel to India next year again. Hopefully, this time with a lineup comprising mainstream artists as well. Even though I bid adieu to this edition with a happy heart, I know I will be attending this celebration of art and music in 2024 too!
