Expectedly, Machu Picchu took my breath away. Situated 7,000 ft high in the Andes Mountain of Peru, these remarkable ruins date back to 1450 CE. They represent the remnants of the great Inca civilisation. Nominated as one of the New Seven Wonders of the World, these ruins were designated as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1983. Despite its decay through time, Machu Picchu's buildings, thousands of steps, walkways, terraces, cemeteries, public squares, a sundial, and a bridge have retained most of their glory. These astonishing constructions were crafted from granite rock—without the use of mortar, steel, or even the wheel—and are earthquake resistant. The stone works and planned constructions bear evidence of the advanced civilisation of the Incas. History enthusiasts, nature lovers, and photographers alike find this citadel city to be a dream destination. Pro Tip: Begin your exploration early in the morning, to beat the crowd and witness the beauty of the sunrise over the mountains.
To gain a better understanding of the history and significance of Machu Picchu, we opted for a guided tour. These tours are perfect for groups as knowledgeable guides provide fascinating insights into the ancient Incan civilisation, the purpose of the various structures, and the subsequent flow of events. We learned a great deal about the theories surrounding the rise and fall of the Inca Empire. This deepened our understanding and appreciation of this remarkable archaeological site. Pro Tip: Look for tour guides who specialise in group travel and are well-versed in the history and culture of Machu Picchu.
A trek is a must for the adventurers in your group. The trail winds through lush forests, leading to the ancient stone stairways that take you to the summit of Huayna Picchu. Ascending the stairway makes for an exhilarating challenge. With our excellent group dynamics, we were able to easily overcome it. Embarking on this hike together not only added to the thrill of the journey but also strengthened our team spirit through mutual support and motivation. Pro Tip: If you wish to hike Huayna Picchu, it is advisable to book in advance as daily permits are limited. The hike is moderately difficult—wear suitable footwear and ensure you have a good level of fitness.
This strategically located entry point is known as the controlling gate for people passing through it. This gate is believed to have been accessible only to the guests of the elites of the empire. From this gate, you can soak in sweeping views of the stone-built city and the surrounding mountains. Witnessing this breathtaking moment as a group creates a sense of shared awe and appreciation for the beauty of Machu Picchu. Pro Tip: Arrive early to secure the best viewing spot and then wait for the sun to gradually reveal the splendour of Machu Picchu.
Consider spending time in the mountainside village of Aguas Calientes to add to your experience. It serves as the main gateway for visitors to Machu Picchu. The village is home to natural hot springs that are renowned for their therapeutic properties. This charming village has various tourist facilities and a few attractions that are worth a visit. You will find great accommodation options, restaurants, public services, a crafts and utility items market, a museum, gardens, and a bird and butterfly sanctuary here. Our group trip to Aguas Calientes was a lot of fun. Despite being travel weary, we were able to keep our spirits up because of the camaraderie and conversations we exchanged throughout the journey. After a day of exploration, we spent our time learning about the local culture, discussing the art and architecture, trying traditional Peruvian dishes, and relaxing amid the hot springs. Pro Tip: While in Aguas Calientes, be sure to interact with the locals and learn about their way of life. It will enrich your travel experience.
We discovered that Machu Picchu is a destination that will not only captivate your senses but will also leave an indelible mark on your mind. The awe-inspiring ruins are a testament to the incredible achievements of the ancient Inca civilisation, and our travel was undoubtedly an experience of a lifetime.
