Anamudi is the highest peak in the Western Ghats in South India. It is also known as the Everest of South India.
We travelled to Munnar via Kochi. To enjoy a stress-free holiday, we hired a cab for the entire duration of our trip. The trip from Kochi airport to Munnar was smooth. We were happy to see the dwindling traffic once we were outside the city. The driver turned out to be a seasoned pro who knew the place very well. Thanks to our driver, we stopped at the best selfie spots along the way. Look out for some great selfie spots while you are here. We got some of the best shots here!
We stayed in a beautiful resort built on the edge of a valley. The entrance was on the top floor and the rooms and suites were on the lower floors. We were thrilled to see a string of low clouds passing by our window. When we stepped outside, it was as though we were walking on clouds! I tried to click some pictures but ended up with white frames.
How do you capture a cloud when you’re in it?
Our first sightseeing spot was Top Station. It is located about 32 kilometres from Munnar and is 1700 metres above sea level. It’s a popular tourist spot that offers breathtaking views of the ghats and valleys. The best time to visit Top Station is in the morning hours. The fog sets in the late afternoon and evening making driving difficult. When we got to the top, the cloud cover had already set in. We had to wait for almost half an hour for the sky to clear up. We didn't get much of a view while we waited at the spot. However, the cool surroundings make it a great time to cuddle and stay in the mist.
We were charmed by the relaxed environment and scenic beauty of Munnar. Our driver took us along the best routes around the tea gardens. We will always cherish the long drives through the hills. The aroma of freshly clipped tea leaves and fresh vegetation here is so welcoming!
Munnar has a host of dams and lakes that offer boat rides. You can hire boats on an hourly basis or even for an entire day. The Mattupetty Dam and Lake are about 13 kilometres from Munnar. We decided to take a speed boat, mainly because the queue for the paddle boats was too long. The boat driver gave us life jackets to wear. We held on to the handles on the boat and each other as the little speed boat zipped across the lake. The spray of icy water, the low temperature, and the speed of the boat got the adrenaline pumping for sure. After the boat ride, we enjoyed some hot corn with butter and lime before moving on to our next destination.
Another popular destination for boat rides is the Anayirankal Dam and lake. Here we decided to go for a two-seater paddle boat. Paddling on our own allowed us to enjoy the lake and its picturesque setting at a leisurely pace. We saw herds of elephants drinking water from the lake before disappearing into the forest. Keep your cameras ready for such surprises!
As recommended by our driver, we decided to head to the hill station of Kundala. It is located around 20 kilometres from Munnar. It was definitely worth the trip! You can find shikhara-style boats in the serene waters of the lake here. This is one experience you don't want to miss!
This service is quite popular among honeymooners. The hills are adorned by a variety of flowering plants. The hills are especially famous for the neelakurunji flowers. According to legends, this flower symbolises love and harmony in nature. This rare plant blooms only once in 12 years. Unfortunately, the plant is expected to bloom again in 2030.
Camping on the hillside has been on my bucket for a very long time. If you enjoy, camping, this is a great opportunity! There are various camping sites here. You can hire tents if you don't have your own. Nestled amidst the hills, the tents are comfortable for an overnight stay. They also adhere to safety standards. You can spend the evening here under the open sky, counting the stars. Evening bonfires and barbecues are a highlight of these stays.
There are nearly a dozen waterfalls in and around Munnar. The picturesque Attukal Waterfalls is located around 10 km away from the Munnar bus stand. As the falls were crowded, we decided to hire bicycles and explore the surrounding terrain. We discovered many spots for great Instagram clicks!
The Lakkam Waterfalls is another captivating tourist spot. It is about 25 kilometres from the Munnar bus stand. You can enjoy picnics at this beautiful place. We spent some time at the freshwater pond here. However, the water was too chilly for a dip.
You can also enjoy a wildlife safari at the nearby Eravikulam National Park in Munnar. The Nilgiri Tahr, an endangered mountain goat, is the main attraction of the national park in the Kanna Devan Hills.
Munnar is a trekker's paradise. Many beautiful places here are not on any tourist map. We spent nearly three hours exploring the routes. They are often obscured by the hills and tea gardens spread across kilometres. If you love exploring, you can walk through the terrain and discover places.
Drinking tea is both an art and a habit in India. No matter which part of the country you hail from, tea in some form will be a part of your daily routine! While I prefer tea with milk, my partner prefers it in its purest form with just piping hot water.
There are a host of tea factories in Munnar. Tea leaves picked from the tea gardens are processed here. You can opt for a guided tour to see the process first-hand. We took a tour that lasted 30 minutes. At the end of the tour, you can sample the various blends here.
Towards the end of the Munnar trip, we were exhausted and our hearts were full. What could be better than a trip to the spa to unwind and relax? We booked a couples spa session here. The session included ayurvedic therapies like Abhyanga, Shirodhara and a steam session, followed by a shower. The therapists here use locally grown spices and oils to ease the sore muscles. This trip to Munnar helped us spend quality time with each other without the stress of our daily schedules. The beautiful pictures and videos from Munnar always bring back memories of the wonderful time we shared here.
The best way to reach Munnar is by road. Kochi is the nearest airport and major railway station. A cab ride takes around 4 hours to reach Munnar. The route from Kochi to Munnar passes through scenic mountains. Do stop at some points to click glorious selfies to add to your memory album!
Neelakurinji is called the flower of love. It blooms once every 12 years in the Idukki district of Kerala.
