On paper, it’s rice flour, coconut, salt, and water. On the palate, it is a delicious explosion of flavours. Even more so when this big ball of rice-flour noodles called Idiyappam is paired with a delicious egg curry. The latter is a savoury concoction of vegetables, spices, and herbs cooked to perfection and topped with perfectly hard-boiled eggs. Your trip to Munnar will be incomplete if you don’t dig your teeth into a truly 'eggs-quisite' dish. You can also switch the egg curry with a chicken dish.
Where to try: The Post Office Road in Munnar has plenty of stalls serving Idiyappam
In Munnar, deliciousness is served in many shapes and sizes. In Puttu, it takes a cylindrical shape and accompanies a lip-smacking Kadala curry. While Puttu is a steamed rice cake cooked with generous helpings of coconut shavings, the latter is a fusion curry made with black chickpeas and an aromatic blend of herbs and spices. Together, they make what is, perhaps, Kerala's most popular breakfast choice. This is the perfect way to start my day. What about you?

Raise your hand if you love seafood! Raise your other hand if you want it served tangy and spicy! Good, now rub your hands together and get ready to savour a flavour unlike any other.
Kerala Prawn Curry is as much about succulence as it is about balance. For every hint of meat, there’s just the right amount of jaggery. Coconut milk smoothly blends with the stately aromas of spices and curry leaves. The result is an absolute crowd-pleaser of a dish brimming with local culinary brilliance. Help yourself to a plateful; I won't judge you for being a little too 'selfish!'
Where to try: Mayabazar, Munnar
Quick question: What do you get when a soft and silken flatbread (Ari Pathri) is served with an irresistibly spicy and succulent chicken curry? An unparalleled, mouthwatering local delicacy. It is one of the best things you’ll come across when hunting for street food in Munnar.

Stroll along for deep-fried delights!
It’s chicken and fried, but I bet it is unlike any other fried chicken you’ve ever had. This is KFC of a different kind; this is Kerala-style Fried Chicken. Crispy on the outside and juicy inside, Kerala Fried Chicken bursts with flavours that will titillate your taste buds from the first bite and leave you wanting more. Also known as Nadan Kozhi Varuthathu, this fried chicken dish is traditionally served on a banana leaf.
Where to try: Guru Restaurant, K.T.D.C. Road, Munnar
The North Indian equivalent of a Lachcha Paratha, Malabar Parotta is a layered sizzling brilliance served hot and crispy. I can guarantee its first bite is enough to make you weak in the knees. The experience reaches a different height when paired with beef fry, one of Kerala’s staple dishes. ‘Otherworldy’ and ‘sensational’ are the kind of superlatives that describe the dish.
Vegetarians, don’t lose heart. You can pair up the Parotta with spicy Stews or Curries and take your taste buds for a treat.
Where to try: Rapsy Restaurant, Main Bazaar, SH 17, Munnar
Kerala-Style fish will probably hook you from the first whiff, especially if you love eating fish. It is one of Munnar's signature dishes. It is rich in nutritional value and flavour. A blend of spices, tamarind, and coconut milk is used in generous amounts, lending the dish its unique taste. You can pair this dish with Malabar Parotta, Appam, or Ari Pathri. Fried or curried, Kerala-style fish is a truly delicious affair awaiting you.

Saunter around for steamy stews and fulfilling thalis!
You cannot be in Munnar and not try Kerala’s staple dish: Appam. Made with fermented rice batter and coconut milk, it is thick and pancake-like at the centre and paper-thin and crispy at the edges. Do yourself a favour and pair your appams with a creamy, steamy stew. Be it a vegetable stew or a chicken, it will come loaded with a unique blend of local spices and vegetables (and chicken). Of course! that will send your taste buds into a state of eternal bliss.
Where to try: Saravana Bhawan, Munnar Market, M.G. Road, Munnar
Don't worry vegetarians, I got your back. Munnar's street food creds befit both non-vegetarians and vegetarians. Even though most of the items on the menu are predominantly non-vegetarian, vegetarians are still in for a spectacular Malabarian treat in the form of Kairali thali. This thali includes rice with sambar and rasam, payasam, vegetable pachadi, mixed vegetable thoran, and many other items. All the dishes are garnished with copious amounts of spices and crushed coconut.
Where to try: Kerala Traditional Homely Food, OLD AM ROAD, Mankulam-Munnar Trail, Munnar
And wrap it up with some biryani in your system!
I am among those who sincerely believe that no region’s cuisine is complete unless there is biryani in it. In comes Kerala’s Malabar Biryani! I have never been able to hold myself even for a split second after it is served. The choicest ingredients and a unique cooking method render it a distinct flavour, easily distinguishable from biryanis from other regions of India.
Also known as Thalassery Briyani, Malabar Biryani is prepared using a different variety of rice known as Jeerakasala. So, if you’re in Munnar and in the mood for some traditional biryani, order it without a second thought. I promise its rich aroma is going to melt your heart.
Where to try: Many restaurants in Munnar offer this dish
