Discover the allure of nocturnal train travel under the moonlit skies
Night trains work their magic and effortlessly transform me from a night owl into a delightful morning person. I find overnight train journeys both time-saving and restful when the travel time is around six to eight hours, and it is the perfect duration to sleep, travel, and reach your destination. These nocturnal voyages become the perfect solution for traversing long distances, providing heartwarming memories and experiences.
The train scene in the evening is a completely different world. Passengers start settling down with their homemade dinner while some buy it from the canteen. I've eaten some of the best mouth-watering meals onboard, reflecting the culinary heritage of the places the train passes through. On my night train journey back home to Ahmedabad from Chennai, I remember having delicious and piping hot plates of Idlis and coconut chutney bought from a vendor passing through the coaches. He crossed my coach twice, and both times, I asked for a plate. Another memorable meal was the steaming Aloo Parathas I had on my overnight journey from Amritsar to Jaipur. From vada-pav, chikkis, chai, and coffee to idli-chutney, jhal-muri, and parathas, train journeys have given me an appreciation of the diversity of India's mouth-watering culinary landscape.
When the dusky tones override the coach windows, the curtains start to fall, lights start dimming, and the ongoing rattling of tiffin boxes slowly ceases. The constant shouts of vendors selling tea, coffee and water bottles start fading away as everyone begins putting up their makeshift beds. I like cosying up with my book while a different kind of adventure unfolds by my window. The landscape outside is cloaked with darkness, and all I can see is my reflection in the glass. I like how the rhythmic chugging of wheels on the track does not irritate but becomes a symphonic lullaby, gently putting everyone to a sound sleep. I turn on my overhead reading light as I transform my berth into a personal sanctuary with white crisp sheets and a snuggly blanket, and continue to read on for a while until I doze off as well.
I wake up at the crack of dawn to enjoy the sight of the sun brightening the horizon. With the train gliding through the countryside, I witness the residents of those villages and towns go about their daily chores and routine. The spectacle of a few children and people waving at the people on the train as it whistles past never gets old. Stunning sunrises have greeted me during my travels to different regions of India. The golden rays of sunlight falling on the verdant fields and colourful villages creates a series of moments which makes it memorable to watch from a passing train.
I believe that every journey is rewarding. From trying regional snacks across the various railway stations to striking conversations with fellow passengers over shared meals, night train travel is an immersive cultural experience. I fondly reminisce about the unexpected friendships forged during my overnight travels. As the train departs, stories are shared, and camaraderie forms among the strangers. Once, while travelling to Hyderabad from Vadodara, I had an evening train to catch, which I almost missed. It was pouring, and I was drenched before catching the train in haste. An old lady instantly showed her motherly concerned instincts and offered me a fresh cloth napkin from her bag. We bonded over my homemade dinner and made a spontaneous, friendly connection. Such chance encounters filled with laughter and diverse anecdotes become cherished memories for a lifetime. And it's heartening to see how overnight train journeys create a sense of community, surpassing geographical and cultural boundaries.
From bustling cities to charming neighbourhoods, each train route promises an ever-changing tableau. There's something exhilarating about the night train journey — the thrill of waking up to a new destination revealing its own secrets and transporting me to a new world of unique experiences. It's a poetic journey that enriches my soul and every other train traveller.
