North Indias Most Romantic Hill Stations for Valentines Day

This Valentine's Day, experience the magic of love in the most serene and romantic hill stations in North India.

The hills have a magical way of helping us discover ourselves and heal. In December 2017, I travelled to a hill station in North India with my girlfriend at a time when my relationship was going through a crisis. Despite having tried almost everything and being unable to resolve the issues, we decided to give it one last shot by taking a trip to Manali together. Not only did it help us save the relationship, but it also triggered the desire to travel to every hill station in North India.

So, whether you are looking to rekindle the flame or in the throes of exploring new love, there is no better way to nurture love than by taking a trip together. North India is home to some of the most picturesque hill towns in the country, which include Nainital, Manali, Mussoorie, Gulmarg, Shimla, and Dalhousie. Visiting these places can make you fall in love with yourself and your partner again and again!

Here's my list of the most romantic hill stations in North India where you can head on Valentine's Day to make some wonderful memories and savour those special moments together.

Table of Contents:

  • Gulmarg
  • Manali
  • Shimla
  • Nainital
  • Mussoorie

Gulmarg

Gulmarg is a place so beautiful that one glance at its picture can trigger an uncontrollable urge to simply "teleport" there. Located in Baramullah, Kashmir, at an elevation of 2,600 m, Gulmarg is a gem of a holiday destination for anyone who wishes to experience the surreal beauty of the Himalayas.

Also known as the "meadow of flowers", Gulmarg is where you'll see towering snowy peaks and pine-covered slopes that look straight out of a picture postcard. You can choose from a variety of exciting activities here; however, skiing and horse riding are highly recommended.

Did you know Gulmarg Gondola has the highest cable car rides in the world? Brace for it – the last phase of this ride can take you as high as 12,300 ft! No wonder this place tops our list of hill stations in North India for the Valentine's Day holiday.

Best time to visit: The summer months from April to June are the best time to visit Gulmarg if you want to enjoy the blast of colours. If you are interested in skiing or witnessing a winter wonderland, consider visiting from December to February.

Recommendations for a stay in Gulmarg: The Marigold Resort, the Khyber Himalayan Resort & Spa, Grand Mumtaz Resorts Gulmarg, and Green Park Hotel.

Manali

Surrounded by the lofty snow-capped peaks of the Pir Panjal range and Dhauladhar range, Manali is a gorgeous hill station located in Himachal Pradesh. It is an overnight journey to Manali from New Delhi, making it a great option for a getaway over an extended weekend.

Take your sweetheart for a walk through the charming streets of Old Manali and indulge in some cafe hopping. Take a day trip to Sissu, a village known for its breathtaking landscapes across the famous Atal Tunnel. If you're feeling adventurous, head for hikes and treks near Sethan village, Jagatsukh village, or visit the Jogini Falls in Vashisht.

A stay in Manali will leave you with unforgettable experiences and a sense of peace and calm. Nothing could be more romantic!

Pro tip: Rent a two-wheeler and explore Manali at your own pace.

Best time to visit: Visit Manali between November and February to enjoy snowfall. For views of lush green hills and visiting apple orchards, March to June is the best time.

Recommendations for a stay in Manali: The Hideout Hiraeth, North Deodar Avenue, Johnson's Lodge & Spa, and Naggar Castle

Shimla

Shimla is known as the Queen of the Hills – and with good reason. Whether it is the alluring Mall Road vibes, Bollywood, or toy train rides during snowfall, there are countless reasons to visit this timeless hill station. Trust me, you can't visit Shimla just once!

I have fond memories of casually strolling from Scandal Point to Lakkar Bazaar with my girlfriend. The cool, breezy evenings, misty mornings, and crisp sunshine (whenever clouds allow it) create a magical atmosphere. The sight of centuries-old buildings from the British era and the aroma of freshly baked goodies on Mall Road lends an old-world charm to the city's bustling commercial district. These little things make Shimla much more than just a popular hill station in North India.

Pro tip: Don't miss the scenic ride on Jakhoo Ropeway, which is also the easiest way to reach the ancient Jakhoo Temple, dedicated to Lord Hanuman.

Best time to visit: For winter lovers, November to March is a great time to visit. To experience the best of Shimla and nearby attractions, plan a trip between April and June.

Recommendations for a stay in Shimla: Welcomhotel By ITC Hotels, The Oberoi Cecil, Larisa Resort Shimla, the Hosteller, and British Resort.

Nainital

When I first travelled solo, I visited Nainital, which was also the first place I ever visited in Uttarakhand. Although I had a superb time on my own, everything I saw and experienced would have been even better with my partner beside me.

Situated at an altitude of around 2,085 m, Nainital is a charming hill station in the Kumaon region of Uttarakhand. It sits in perfect harmony with Naini Peak and the placid Naini Lake right in the middle. While here, enjoy boating on Naini Lake, exploring Mall Road, checking out the local cafes and restaurants, and hiking to Naini Peak, which is the highest peak in Nainital.

Nainital is just a 7-hour drive from Delhi – perfect for a romantic weekend road trip with your partner to celebrate Valentine's Day.

Pro tip: Walk or cycle your way to the beautiful hamlet of Khurpatal.

Best time to visit: Nainital is best visited from December to February if you want to experience the magic of winter here. If you and your beau are outdoorsy, March to June is a great time to visit the hill town.

Recommendations for a stay in Nainital: The Naini Retreat, The Pinewood, Balrampur House, and Vista Hostel Jeolikote

Mussoorie

Romantic walks through secluded pine forests, delicious local street food, and extravagant shopping await you and your partner in Mussoorie. This hill station has long been hot on the tourist trail, owing to its cool weather, warm hospitality, stunning drives, and easy hikes. Additionally, its proximity to Delhi and Chandigarh makes it a hit among couples, especially on Valentine's Day.

Don't miss the panoramic views from its several viewpoints, a wildlife safari in the Benog Wildlife Sanctuary, white water rafting from Nainbagh to Judo, and a visit to the unmissable Kempty Falls. All this makes Mussoorie a perfect combination of natural beauty, adventure, and romance to spend a memorable Valentine's Day.

Best time to visit: Mussoorie gets quite crowded during summer; hence, I recommend December to March for a romantic trip. Recommendations for a stay in Mussoorie: Sterling Mussoorie, Welcomhotel By ITC Hotels, the Savoy, JW Marriott Mussoorie Walnut Grove Resort & Spa, and the Hosteller So, what are you waiting for? Start planning your next Valentine's Day getaway to one of these romantic hill stations to elevate your love to new heights. And don't forget to capture those special moments with your Valentine!
