Not into Partying? Here are 5 Ways to Welcome New Year Quietly

The NYE you didn't know you wanted in the city that never sleeps

Consider this: you're in Mumbai, and it's that time of the year again. 'Where's the New Year bash?', 'What plans for the 31st?', 'It is going to be an all-night party!' Every December, these words automatically seep into every conversation. December is called the party month for a reason. The excitement in the air is palpable, especially if you're in the Maximum City, and the motivation to get any work done is at an all-time low.

However, New Year's Eve does not always have to be synonymous with wild parties. You don't have to spend the entire night dancing in a crowded club at the stroke of midnight. This time do something offbeat! If you're not the kind to drink and dance till you drop, a quiet evening with a partner is enough to make lifelong memories. Read on to find wholesome ideas for a fun NYE, solo or with your friends and family!

Finding Marine Drive

If you're in Mumbai, you can visit the Marine Drive at any time of the day or night. You can sit here for hours, lost in thought and gazing at the glistening skyline. Quoting from the movie Wake Up Sid, 'The sea has always been special to this city.' What better place than the Queen's Necklace to admire it?

Imagine sitting here with your closest friends or your significant other on New Year's Eve, enjoying the fireworks amidst a starry sky, a slight nip in the air, and some cutting chai to go with your conversations. If you'd like to spend New Year solo, it is also the best place to enjoy your company. It's almost therapeutic and easily makes it to the top three relaxing things to do.

Sailing at Gateway of India

The first time I was on a yacht was for my friend's birthday, and it was hands down one of the best experiences ever: the sound of gushing waves, the adrenaline rush, merry laughter all around, and the fresh breeze in our faces. If you and your friends are looking to celebrate New Year's Eve away from the hustle and bustle of the city amid the sea, you can always book a private yacht at the Gateway of India and go sailing.

There are great packages on Leisure Kart or Boat Booking India, starting from INR 3,000 per yacht and going up to INR 50,000 depending on the size and capacity of the yacht. While renting a boat for a whole day might be expensive, you always have the option of renting it for a couple of hours to get the experience of a lifetime.

Dining High in the Open

A quiet and cosy dinner on New Year's Eve might sound uninspiring, but it's one of the best alternatives to parties. You get to dress up, eat a delicious meal, maybe have a few cocktails, and have heartwarming conversations; a nice change from screaming over the DJ at a club. You can also click decent pictures against an aesthetic background instead of sweaty selfies on the dance floor that never make it to the 'gram.

In Mumbai, a place like this is not hard to find. If you make a reservation well in advance, you can get a decent table at a rooftop restaurant for a romantic dinner faster than you can enter a club. One such place worth visiting is the Skky Lounge at Powai. With impeccable cocktails, lip-smacking dishes, and an ambience that will blow your mind, this is the place to be on NYE if you want to get away from the usual party scene.

Driving on Bandra-Worli Sea Link

Have you ever driven around Mumbai late at night with your favourite songs blasting in your car? If not, you're missing out on one of the most feel-good aspects of the city. Whether you drive on the freeway towards Colaba or hit Marine Drive, the empty roads dazzling with street lights create a whole new urban vibe. Pro tip: Pull your windows down to enjoy the cool night breeze.

Feel free to stop for ice cream at Haji Ali Juice Centre, open till 2 am. Taking the Bandra-Worli sea link is the highlight of long drives. The eight-lane cable bridge, built over Mahim Bay connecting Bandra and Worli, is a true architectural delight. If you enjoy the finer things in life, this is one New Year moment you will cherish for a long time.

Staying Home

If you're more indoorsy, staying home in comfortable pyjamas is the best way to bring in the New Year. Call your friends over, order some pizza, open a bottle of wine, and you have the perfect low-key and budget-friendly NYE setting right in your home.

The night will be extremely special whether you play board games or huddle together in a blanket to watch a movie. Good food plus good company always equals good vibes. On NYE 2019, I fell sick and couldn't go out to a party with my family. I remember feeling alone and sad. However, two of my best friends came over. We talked and laughed the entire night, reminiscing about the previous year while eating cake and binge-watching Friends. It was one of the best New Year's I've ever had!

While New Year's Eve may seem to be about the glitz and glam in an ever-buzzing Mumbai, these underrated experiences are worth every bit. There can't be a better time than NYE to try something new. As long as you're doing what you enjoy, every new year will be awesome, like the one before. Don't let FOMO drag you into yet another party with a hundred people you’ll never meet again. This year, try something different. The next time someone asks you about your plans for NYE, you know what to say!
