From Shrewsbury biscuits to coconut cakes to cruffins – my food spree through Pune's oldest bakeries!
I was in Pune a few weeks ago to visit a friend. We're both die-hard foodies! We planned to catch up through a food tour of the city, and Pune's oldest bakeries were on top of the travel list! My friend has a crazy sweet tooth, so she couldn't wait to bite into the cakes and pastries. Being a bread person, I was excited to devour all the blissful baked goods.
On a sunny Saturday, we travelled across the city to tour the best and oldest bakeries in Pune!

Our first stop was Spicer College Bakery at Ganeshkhind, near Pune University. It is more than a hundred years old! The bakery's recipes are steeped in old-world charm.
We visited the bakery early in the morning after a refreshing morning walk around Aundh. We were already hungry! We couldn't wait to bite into the glazed doughnuts and crunchy puffs and reach culinary heaven!
Housed in the Spicer College complex, this place is more than just a tasteful diversion! It is full of college vibes. Youngsters milled about, exuding youthfulness and confidence. As we stood in line for the food, we were transported to our carefree school days – when we ate anything yum to power through college days. Their food is generally over by the afternoon, so come early!
After a delectable breakfast, we headed to the trendy Camp area for its classic outlets. Punekars flock to Camp for nostalgia. This place is packed with old-style bakeries like the Pasteur, originally known for cakes, bread, puffs, and sweet and savoury biscuits. Today, it has a separate section for an ice cream parlour.
As soon as I noticed the vendor filling cone after cone with creamy swirls, I couldn't help myself! We ordered two softies. The chocolate-covered softie was the creamiest I had ever had! It melted in my mouth, and I was left pining for more. Then we ordered a huge sundae! We became children, giggling and dripping ice cream all over us!
Foodie tip: Don’t miss their freshly baked macaroons, available in coconut and almond flavours and made using old, traditional recipes!
It was mid-morning. We decided to walk around Camp to break the ice-cream-induced stupor.
But guess what, we unknowingly walked from MG Road to Dr Coyaji Road and ended in front of Kayani Bakery! One look at this classic Parsi bakery got our stomachs rumbling again. Kayani’s Shrewsbury biscuits were motivation enough.
The aroma of fresh baking surrounded us as soon as we entered. As usual, there was a long line. But we made the most of this time chatting about old times. A peek inside the kitchen revealed typical Parsi boisterousness. Cooks wearing chef caps were hurrying and shouting commands! Someone was calling out prepared orders for the customers.
Foodie tip: While you stand in line to buy Shrewsbury biscuits, sample their milk bread, mawa cake, ginger biscuits, and khari biscuits! Although the bakery opens at 7:30 am, reach early to line up for the treats!
In the afternoon we roamed about Camp's green avenues and shopped for trinkets. But by tea time, our feet took us to Persian Bakery at Kalyani Nagar.
The first thing we saw was a board with their cute motto: We knead your needs. Then our eyes took in their traditional Irani food. Pastry puffs and jam tarts and various cookies. They also sell many creative cakes.
Here we enjoyed hot Irani chai with crackling butter khari. I also got some whole wheat burger buns and jam-filled coconut cakes for later!
As the sun went down, we drove to Koregaon Park for the last treat of the day.
Emmer Bakery had a quaint French vibe with a vibrant décor. It was surrounded by brightly painted potted plants, and the dappled light created interesting patterns. This beautiful bakery was the perfect place to sit, unwind, and catch up.
But my main reason for the visit was to taste their signature special – cruffins! So we ordered this fusion of croissants and muffins to go with a warm cup of coffee. For a change, there were also healthy options on the menu, and we ordered two of their smoothie bowls.
This was the perfect power-packed meal at the end of a tiring day. It felt good to treat myself to healthy goodness after all the high-calorie food.
Foodie tip: This bakery sells unique matcha-flavoured goodies, from matcha lattes to matcha cakes. Fans of this Japanese drink can indulge themselves! Pre-order their custom cakes in your desired size, shape, and flavour!
Our stomachs were full, but we couldn't help but sneak in one last bakery on our tour. So back to Camp we went!
Imperial Bakery in Pulgate is one of the city's oldest bakeries and is generally open till 10 pm. This bakery is famous for its super-soft garlic bread. And we planned to pack some stuff for the next day’s breakfast. But as soon as I entered, I couldn't resist the delicious aroma of their oatmeal raisin cookies – the perfect mid-morning snack for when I'm writing. This bakery has the best plum cake in the city, especially around Christmas. You should have seen us heading out with bags full of yummy goodies!
Our day tour of Pune's oldest bakeries ended with contentment – for our tummies and tongues. Even before we reached home, we were already planning our next trip. We were ready to explore the city's offbeat places for true culinary immersion!
