Uttarakhand is an enchanting treasure trove of painted landscapes, rich forests, diverse wildlife and vibrant culture. The state is also home to some of the most gorgeous hotels and homestays that serve as perfect vantage points for photographers. So, if you're a photography enthusiast who craves to photograph the true essence of the mountains, consider moving Uttarakhand to the top of your list of getaway destinations.

  • Cottages near Nainital
  • Wildlife photography in Kanatal
  • Relaxing stays in Mukteshwar and Rishikesh

In and around Mussoorie

I will begin with one of my favorite hotels in Mussoorie, Hotel Evelyn. Situated off Mall Road, the balcony of my room became my go-to spot as it offered breathtaking views of the Garhwali Himalayas. As the morning sunlight gently dispersed the clouds, unveiling the majestic mountain ranges, it became the perfect spot for capturing the breathtaking landscapes. Moreover, if you visit during Mussoorie's Winterline Carnival, you can spot—and photograph—the faux horizon phenomenon directly from the comfort of your room.

If you own zoom lenses, the hotel balcony is also an ideal spot to indulge in bird watching and photography. Another personal favourite spot, not far from Mussoorie, is nestled within the charming vintage cottage of Rokeby Manor. Amidst the serene ambience and the melodious chirping of birds, the mountains reveal their various facets as the sunlight interacts with the misty fog. From the vantage point of my room, nature knocked on my window and stayed there, striking a pose for my camera. A charming addition to this stay is that you can photograph the star-laden sky on a clear night.

Eco resort in Chopta

Accommodations in Northern Uttarakhand offer more captivating and dramatic views, and among them, I highly recommend Snowpod in Chopta. It provided 180 degrees of pristine snow-clad mountainscapes. Doesn't this sound like a mesmerising getaway spot? At this eco-luxury resort, you'll find igloo-like pods with panoramic windows that offer sweeping views of the mountains. Even when the surrounding is covered in snow, and it is hard to step out, I was able to photograph winter's beauty from the comfort of my room.

Cottages near Nainital

The colonial-style cottages at Te Aroha in Dhanachuli is two hours away from Nainital. It is the perfect getaway spot that overlooks the stunning Himalayan peaks of the Kumaon region. My room had wide windows exactly opposite the cosy bed. I could simply slide the curtains, and nature's perfectly created vistas lay before me to photograph. Another nearby cottage, the Oak Chalet, is a traditional stone and wood retreat. It has huge floor-to-ceiling glass windows that provide clear views of the mountains. Doesn't this sound like a perfect photography opportunity?

Wildlife photography in Kanatal

Another favourite of mine is the Hermitage on Chamba-Mussoorie Road in Kanatal. This one has sit-out terraces and a dining space for unparalleled views of the lofty mountains and dense forests. You can also go on a wildlife photography excursion in an open jeep. I was told that you can spot foxes, barking deer and bears, and photograph them in their natural habitat. Unfortunately, I couldn't spot any, but the local guide did talk about his experience of witnessing a leopard.

Relaxing stays in Mukteshwar and Rishikesh

My traveller friends had been talking a lot about The Birdcage in Mukteshwar, so I decided to go check it out. I took out my Canon to see if it was worth it. And I regret not experiencing the retreat sooner. It is a luxury boutique with only six rooms tucked on the edge of the cliff. The lush, tall coniferous trees dance all day, and the mountains put up a show for all nature lovers. It is a serene hotel for a rejuvenating stay. I cannot end my list without telling you about my perfect stay in Rishikesh, the country's Yoga capital. Rishikesh is known for its breathtaking scenery of verdant mountains and the gushing waters of the River Ganga. All of this can be enjoyed at the charming property of Aloha on the Ganges. It is a luxury resort, and although it is a tad bit expensive, it offers great opportunities for photography.

From the comfort of its garden terrace, I could leisurely observe the interplay of light and shadow on the vistas before my eyes. The eye-catching pictures of blue waters and green mountains were photographed perfectly from this location. This lavish resort in Rishikesh also has an Ayurvedic spa for relaxing your sore muscles. Uttarakhand is full of appealing stays that offer excellent Himalayan views. You can find a serene spot, out in the open, for practising photography. However, booking these stays has some added advantages. They not only serve as gateways to the remarkable landscapes but also provide a glimpse into the local heritage and culture of the region. Whether it is the golden hues of the sunrise or the magical hour of the sunset or the star-studded night sky that you photograph, these dreamy Uttarakhand getaway spots deliver front-row seats to witness natural spectacles.
