Planning the best date in Mumbai

From candlelit dinners to scenic walks, I discovered the perfect spots to plan a special romantic date for my girlfriend.

Imagine your ideal date: a romantic candlelit dinner, a leisurely stroll, a quick stop-over for ice-cream, and amidst it all, unforgettable moments shared with your loved one. Now, picture this scenario unfolding against the vibrant backdrop of Mumbai, India's bustling and charming metropolis. Relocating to Mumbai for a six-month project meant being away from my partner. In the beginning, I found it difficult to adjust in the city—I missed my favourite food, evening outings, and above all, spending time with my partner. Our daily phone calls became our lifeline, and through them, I shared details of all the discoveries I made about the city. After two months of long-distance conversations, my girlfriend decided to visit me in Mumbai. I was determined to ensure she had the best time possible in the city. For me, planning the perfect romantic date in Mumbai became a mission of love, as circumstances had temporarily separated us after three years of inseparability. I meticulously planned an entire day filled with venues, scenic vistas, and cultural treasures to make our time together unforgettable. Join me on my personal journey as I recount how I crafted the perfect romantic date in Mumbai.

The Date

On a Friday night, my girlfriend arrived in Mumbai, and I went to pick her up. We were overjoyed to be in each other's company again, and before we knew it, we reached my apartment in Worli. The following day, we began our morning at 9 am with a scrumptious breakfast of her favourite pancakes. I had prepared the pancakes, knowing that they would bring a smile to her face; I was not disappointed. The day was off to a good start.

Walking Along Marine Drive

We started off with a walk along Marine Drive. The day promised to be a beautiful one as we watched the sea and the skyline merge into one. I wanted to have some fun, so I convinced her to climb down to the tetra-pods. We supported each other while maintaining our balance on the rocks as the waves made playful splashes at us. Later, as we got back to the pavement, we realised that we were a little peckish. There were quite a few hawkers selling eatables; we bought a vada pav and shared it. It was spicier than she had expected, so our next stop was Rustom’s ice cream shop, where we had pineapple ice cream. The whole time, we talked about nothing and laughed at everything. It was nice to be in her comforting presence.

Lunch at Britannia Cafe

Our walk helped us build an appetite. We headed for lunch at Britannia Café in Fort, where we treated ourselves to its famous Berry Pulao. We savoured our meal in this picture-perfect setup from a by-gone era. She wanted to take a picture, but a board at the counter said "No Photography". It didn't matter as we had a lovely time at the cafe. With the pleasant weather on our side, we strolled along the lanes of South Bombay, making our way towards the iconic Gateway of India.

Shopping at Colaba Causeway

We went past the Colaba Causeway Street market. Many shops were selling junk jewellery and trinkets. I helped her pick a few earrings. We also bought some funny-looking glasses and clicked some selfies. In a few minutes, we reached the Gateway of India.

Sailing along the Arabian Sea

This was completely unplanned... When I saw the boats docked at the Gateway of India, I asked her if she would be interested in a boat ride. With a yes, we rented a boat for an hour, enjoying the tranquillity of the sea, away from the swarming crowds at the Gateway. We had our privacy here and could talk more openly on intimate subjects.

Tea time at the Taj

After returning to the Gateway of India, we made our way to the Taj Mahal Palace Hotel. We took a tour of the hotel and marvelled at the stunning architecture and history of the iconic establishment. We also had tea at the hotel's famous Rotunda Lounge. It was such a special experience, and my partner felt happy that we got to do it together.

Watching a play at Prithvi Theatre

As the sun descended, we hopped into a cab that whisked towards the elegant Bandra-Worli Sea Link. Our next stop was Prithvi Theatre, where we attended a lively and uproarious play, sharing moments of laughter and delight. Following the performance, we strolled along Juhu Beach and found a secluded corner. There, under the moonlit sky, we engaged in heartfelt conversations, serenaded by the gentle rhythm of the waves.

Dinner at Seaside Patio

At around 10 pm, we went for dinner at Seaside Patio in Juhu. Both of us were led to a table that overlooked the Arabian Sea. The view was magnetic, and we took a moment to soak it all in before turning our attention to the menu. The restaurant specialised in seafood, and we were excited to try the local dishes. My partner was clueless, so I took charge and ordered my favourites—bombil and mackerel. She hadn’t tasted anything like bombil before and loved it so much that we ordered more. Throughout the meal, we sipped on cocktails and wine, enjoying each other's company and the beautiful surroundings. The staff was attentive and friendly, and the ambience was just right for a romantic evening.

Midnight ride in a Mumbai Local

It was time for us to head home. Instead of hailing a cab, we decided to take the Mumbai local. Since it was quite late, the train was nearly empty and made for a smooth and peaceful ride. We could feel the breeze on our faces as the train swiftly moved through the city.

Some More Places That You May Consider

While considering options for the outing, various other alternatives crossed my mind. Unfortunately, due to time constraints, I couldn't accommodate them all. Despite my desire to explore the Kanheri Caves at Sanjay Gandhi National Park, the distance from South Mumbai was too great and would mean an uncomfortably early start. So, that plan had to be set aside. Another option that emerged was a visit to Mannat, with hopes of catching a glimpse of Shah Rukh Khan at his home. But I realised I am a little more Bollywood obsessed than my partner, and she wouldn't find it as interesting. However, on our next excursion, and knowing her affinity for creative spaces and being photographed, I plan to take her to Sassoon Docks for a photoshoot. My partner immensely enjoyed her time in Mumbai, leaving me content in my ability to craft a truly exceptional romantic date. Undoubtedly, this Mumbai escapade has created unforgettable memories for both of us.
