Explore the heart of Kerala that lies beyond the tourist trails, in its villages.
It has often been said that India lies in its villages. Therefore, to know the ‘real’ India, a traveller should ideally visit places that are usually not highlighted on the tourist map. So when I decided to visit Kerala, my itinerary included some of the smaller villages instead of the usual popular destinations like Munnar, Wayanad and Kovalam. As the plane descended towards Kochi's vibrant landscape, the anticipation of experiencing the tranquil beauty and cultural richness of Kerala's villages began to take over. My journey began at Kochi International Airport, and over the next few days, I embarked on an unforgettable adventure, visiting the charming villages of Kumbalangi, Kumarakom, Aranmula, and Chavara.
An hour’s drive from Kochi airport, Kumbalangi is a serene coastal village nestled in Kerala’s backwaters. A model of responsible tourism, the village showcases the delicate balance between human life and the environment as it seamlessly blends nature with sustainable community living. As I wandered through the village, I was captivated by the sight of traditional Chinese fishing nets dotting the coastline, the rhythmic sound of waves hitting the shores, and the harmonious coexistence of mangrove forests and local homes. The highlight of my stay in Kumbalangi was, interacting with the friendly villagers. They welcomed me with open arms, sharing stories of their daily lives and the initiatives they've taken to preserve their natural surroundings. I was invited to participate in various activities, such as crab farming and coir making, giving me a hands-on understanding of their traditional occupations.
Leaving Kumbalangi, I headed to Kumarakom, a mesmerizing backwater destination that instantly took my breath away. The interconnected network of canals, lagoons, and lush paddy fields showcased Kerala's intrinsic connection with water. I opted for a houseboat cruise to truly immerse myself in the beauty of the backwaters. Drifting along the tranquil waters, I marvelled at the sight of coconut groves, emerald-green landscapes, and vibrant avian life that painted the sky. The local cuisine in Kumarakom was a delightful surprise. Freshly caught seafood, coconut-infused curries, and an array of aromatic spices created an explosion of flavours on my palate. The warm hospitality of the locals made my stay even more memorable, as they shared their stories, traditions, and even taught me how to weave intricate coconut leaf crafts.
My journey continued to Aranmula, a village celebrated for its intricate metal mirror manufacturing and its revered Parthasarathy Temple. The artisans of Aranmula create "Aranmula Kannadi," a unique mirror known for its polished metal surface that reflects an image without distorting it. Witnessing the meticulous craftsmanship that goes into making each mirror was truly fascinating. The village's spiritual aura was palpable, and I had the privilege of participating in a traditional boat race on the Pamba River, a spectacle that left me in awe of the local community's unity and determination.
The final stop on my Kerala village adventure was Chavara, a quiet coastal village deeply rooted in history and spirituality. The village offers a perfect blend of sandy shores and historic wonders. It's renowned for its ancient churches, which have stood the test of time and hold significant religious importance. Chavara Bhavan – the ancestral home of Saint Kuriakose Elias Chavara, an important figure in Kerala’s Christian history – was the highlight here. The pristine beaches and tranquil atmosphere of Chavara made it a perfect place for sunbathing and some quiet introspection. As I strolled along the coastline, the gentle waves seemed to whisper stories of generations past.
On the last day of my village-hopping tour, I left Chavara for Thiruvanthapuram with a treasure trove of memories and experiences. Kerala's rustic charm, vibrant traditions, and warm hospitality had woven an indelible impression on my heart. From the backwaters to the temples, from the serene beaches to the scenic views, each village offered a unique tapestry of colours and flavours. The journey unveiled the essence of Kerala's soulful identity, fostering a deeper connection with the land and its people. As I boarded my flight at Thiruvananthapuram airport, I carried with me the spirit of Kerala's villages and felt inspired to seek more hidden gems in other parts of India.
