Let the battle of the buns begin
When I look for a great burger, a few things jump to mind. The first is the taste (obviously!), but other factors are also at play here. Is the bun fresh and not crumbly? Is the burger patty well made – not falling apart but not too compact either to the point of unpleasantness? Is the burger too big to eat with both hands?
On one finely hungry day, I set out to discover the best burger in Bombay among all genres and permutations. Read on to find out if your burger is chicken, veg, pork, or maybe it's made of prawn.
Rumour has it that the chefs at Massive Restaurants, who own Louis Burger, dedicated a year to work on their menu. They conceptualise their craft burgers from scratch with only the best ingredients. Ordering their burger was work lunch for me, but I forgot to make notes as I munched on them: the Korean Fried Chicken Burger, and their OH-SOY Burger as the sole vegetarian contender. As worthy accompaniments, there are onion rings and OG fries.
Louis Burger has two limited-edition burgers on its menu; the Louis Grand Royale is a double tenderloin lamb patty with grilled chicken and gold warak. Yes! A gold leaf-dusted burger can be yours for just INR 888! The vegetarian version of this masterpiece/abomination includes shimeji truffles and shitake mushrooms with truffle oil. While I politely refused them, there’s a sucker born every minute, and who I am to stop.
The burgers arrive, and I'm reminded of their claims of 'fluffy buns' and 'authentic cheddar.' Will they stand up to their promises? Well, I'm happy to tell you that they do, they do! The Korean Fried Chicken Burger is a feast for the eyes and the tum. Crunchy, spicy, and umami tick all the 'good burger' boxes. And their OH-SOY veggie burger is the real revelation of the evening. Who would have thought that a soy and mozzarella patty with chipotle mayo and cheese sauce could cause so much happiness?

You can find the outlets of the local, homegrown brand of Jimis in Andheri, Bandra, Malad, Goregaon, and Vashi. Jimi’s burgers are large. They require a box of tissues and both hands warmed up for action. This is not a burger you can eat and read or eat and walk. You need to hunker down and commit. Be prepared!
The two burgers unanimously chosen were the Chorizo Pork Cheddar Burger, with its insane filling of spicy sausage, pork patty, cheddar cheese, pork sausages, chorizo jam, garlic mayo and caramelised onions. There is not much more to write about this mad genius of a burger except that whoever thought of this deserves an award. The Crispy Fish Burger has a deep-fried fish fillet with pickled red cabbage, roasted garlic mayo, honey lime vinaigrette, and a hot sauce. Too many sauces did not spoil the broth here.

I usually shy away from restaurants turned franchises. They lack individuality and though convenient, are rarely chef-driven. Smoke House Deli, on the other hand, continues to surprise me. Every time we visit, there is something new and exciting on the menu. Seasonal offerings, takeaway specials, and an innovative beverage menu - it’s no wonder the Smoke House Deli has nine popular outlets across the country, with two more in the works, as per reports.
The burger menu at the Deli is short but succinct. There’s chicken, mutton, pork and two veggie options. I appreciate this focus and abbreviation. Simple. To the Point. Delicious. My waiter urged me to try the smoked mutton burger even though it was the Baconator – buff patty wrapped in bacon – that I had come for. I'm glad I listened to him.
The burger was just lovely, not too large and messy. A soft ground mutton patty that still retained a chunky meatiness to it. Simple mustard and mayo made up the condiment list, while slices of fresh tomato and crispy lettuce offered pockets of freshness that this carb fest required. The fries that came along were hand cut with skins on and salted to perfection. I was later informed that I could have opted for either an almond flour bun (the keto option) or the no-bun burger with extra salad. I was glad I was told this after I ordered, so I wasn't guilted into being healthy for the day.

When I was younger, a gloomy darkened resto-bar was down the road from my school. Today, the space is spruced up and gentrified, and the Colaba chapter of Woodside Inn has been feeding people since 2007. Over the years, Woodside Inn has also brought its laidback easy vibe to the suburbs – hello Andheri, Parel, and Bandra.
Wooden panels, comfy sofas in rich hues, and bar-focused decor make Woodside the forever dinner destination for many Mumbaiites. The staff are patient and keep the vibes calm, the music is always played at non-deafening decibels, and the food is a fabulous mix of American and Brit classics. There’s craft beer plenty and at the core of their generous menu are their burgers.
Their Freshly Flipped Burger Menu boasts all the usual suspects. There’s the Bandra Bugger with pepperoni, smoked sausage, chorizo, pork shoulder, gouda, and apple compote. The Ghost Chilli Chicken with lettuce comes with a spice warning. Never ignore the Brooklyn Melt – a quinoa, beetroot and cottage cheese patty topped with smoked gouda. As sides, we added crispy potato skins with wasabi mayo, which was a genius way to use potato peels, to be honest.
The Ghost Chilli Chicken

Chef Seefah Ketchaiyo brought her formidable kitchen prowess to Mumbai in 2011, when she moved cities for a job at The Four Seasons. That’s where she met her husband and business partner, Karan Bane. The duo started their restaurant – simply named Seefah – in 2016 and they been wowing locals from day one. Seefah offers the best of Thailand under one roof. From the creamiest, most piquant Tom Kha to their soft shell crab salad, every dish in Seefah sings with freshness and spice. So, when I heard that the team added a burger kitchen to their repertoire, there was no time to waste.
The Asian Burgers by Seefah menu knows what it wants and does well. New Thai and Japanese-influenced ingredients in old burger avatars work in surprising harmony. We tried the Crispy Mushroom Burger and the Prawn Katsu Burger. The Katsu Burger is chef Seefah’s trademark curry in a bun. With pungent slivers of pickled radish and a chunky prawn patty, the curry sauce is just the icing on this burger. Our Mushroom Burger was loaded with crumb-fried mushrooms and a splash of truffle oil.
The sides are thematic at Seefah. If you have ordered a Japanese burger, you can look forward to a portion of matcha-dusted fries and wasabi salad, while the Thai offerings come with tom yum or Sichuan fries for an extra kick and a som tam or papaya salad. We loved this so much that I squirrelled away a container of salad to enjoy lunch the following day.
