The Cannes Film Festival: Glamour Glitz and the Silver Screen

A cinematic vacation that was more than just breathtaking locales. Read on to explore the mesmerising Cannes and its many facades.

I never knew what true glamour was until I visited Cannes during the Cannes film festival. It was a trip that I had always dreamt of taking, and I finally got the chance to experience the glitz and glamour of the Cannes Film Festival. From the red carpet to the silver screen, every moment was filled with excitement and wonder.

As soon as I arrived in Cannes, I was taken aback by the stunning views of the French Riviera. The sun-soaked beaches, crystal-clear waters that sparkled in the sunlight, and the palm trees swaying to a gentle breeze made it a perfect start to an unforgettable trip.

There are endless things to do and see, and I was determined to make the most of my time there. My itinerary was jam-packed with movie screenings, parties, and sightseeing, and I couldn't wait to dive in.

The Cannes Film Festival is not just a festival but a lifestyle. The first thing on my list was to attend a movie screening at the Palais des Festivals. The Palais is the heart of the festival, and it's where all the action takes place. It's where the stars walk the red carpet, and where the best movies are screened.

The first two days were a little lethargic for me. I took a little time to get acclimatised- the jetlag, the difference in the timezone, and the change in the climate. However, I consider myself to be lucky enough to score a ticket to a screening, and it was an experience like no other.

The cost of one ticket for the festival: $14,995 (approx) [This is subject to change depending on the event, seat category and venue you wish to attend]

Duration: 11 days
Festival Dates: 17th to 28th May 2022
(This year the dates are: 16th to 27th May 2023)

It was on 19th May, I got a chance to watch Rocketry- The Nambi Effect (an Indian film). Written and directed by R. Madhavan, the actor also starred in the eponymous role. The story of Narayanan, the former ISRO scientist and aerospace engineer who was falsely accused of espionage. The movie was incredible, and the energy in the theatre was electric. After the screening, I headed to the beach to soak up some sun and enjoy the stunning views.

Cannes has some of the most beautiful beaches in the world and I couldn't resist the opportunity to relax and unwind. With several beaches stretched over more than 7 km of area in Cannes, tourists and locals are spoilt for choice. I rented a beach chair and umbrella and made myself at home on one of the closest beaches, and spent the afternoon basking in the sun watching the boats sail by. It was the perfect way to recharge my batteries before the evening festivities.

As the Sun began to set, the real fun began. Cannes is known for its legendary parties, and I was determined to experience them for myself. I attended a few different parties, each one more extravagant than the last. From rooftop terraces to beach clubs, the parties were all glamorous and over-the-top. I even got to meet a few celebrities, which was the highlight of my trip.

One of the most memorable experiences of my trip was attending a dinner at a local restaurant, Ondine Plage. The restaurant was located on the beach and had stunning views of the Mediterranean. It was the gastronomic heaven on Earth and the wine served there was mouth-coating. The atmosphere was relaxed, and it was the perfect opportunity to get to know some of the locals and other festival-goers.

When in Cannes Dig Into What the French Eat:

Your visit to Cannes remains incomplete if you do not relish the quintessential Pissaladière, the French cousin of pizza. Though identical, here the traditional tomato sauce is replaced by an onion fondue that has simmered for at least two hours. The topping is often made with pissalat (anchovy cream), anchovy fillets, and black olives. The unique flavour is added with a generous sprinkle of local herbs such as garlic, oregano, thyme, and summer savoury, among others. Almost all the bakeries serve this savoury dish.

Daube Provencale is also a must-hog. Ideally, an alcohol-soaked beef stew is served in Gigondas-style red wine and is flavoured with herbs, such as thyme and orange peel. The beef is soaked in the alcohol for half a day and then steamed for four hours with veggies and the quintessential olive oil. Relish the dish with pasta or mashed potato.

Soak in the Sights and Sounds:

In addition to the parties, movie screenings and delicious food, there are also plenty of sightseeing options in Cannes. I visited the famous La Croisette Boulevard, which is lined with luxury shops, hotels, and restaurants. It's a great place to people-watch and take in the opulence of the city. Here, the perfect harmony in which nature and city life coexist is a joy to observe and enjoy. I also took a stroll through the old town, which is full of narrow streets, colourful buildings, and charming cafes.

One of the highlights of my trip was taking a boat tour of the French Riviera. The tour took us to some of the most beautiful towns and villages in the area, including Antibes, Saint-Tropez, and Villefranche-sur-Mer. The views from the boat were breathtaking, and it was a great way to see a different side of the region.

Major Highlights:

Go for a day’s excursion to the microstate on the French Riviera, Monaco. Soak in the stories of billionaires and princesses, cathedrals and casinos, and admire the dilapidated ancient villages.

Witness the extravaganza of the eponymous festival from the paparazzi jazzed red carpet to the artistic cinematic escapade.

What to Shop:

Parisian Fashion: From affordable and chic Parisian fashion stores to high-end luxury brands; Cannes' retail market is on point and how! Spoil yourself silly with trendy designer wear—from clothes, shoes, and bags, to everything under the Sun!

Perfumes: Cannes is an artisanal shopping destination. Shop-trot for chic brands, as well as local flavours. If you are already soaked in the cinematic voyage and can steal some time from your busy vacation schedule, then give this veritable shopping destination a must-go chance. Shop for some exquisite perfumes. Settle for those absolute local perfume brands.

Posters: How can you not bring the cinema with you from Cannes? This one is my soft spot. Bring those magical posters which capture the pictorial enigma of this dreamy destination. Bring back the joy of movies in those posters, as souvenirs. You will find them in the Le Suquet market or the shops on Rue d’Antibes. Vacationers like me loved to pack some of these released by the Cannes Film Festival also.

Porcelain: The French resort town is a true blue icon for porcelain crockery and glassware. They exude the cultural identity of Cannes and France. The adorable pieces are not only a pleasing sight but also qualify for an exotic gift from Cannes.

Overall, my trip to the Cannes Film Festival was a dream come true. The glamour, glitz, and silver screens exceeded all of my expectations. From the movie screenings to the parties and sightseeing, every moment was unforgettable.

If you're looking for a trip that combines luxury, culture, and entertainment, then the Cannes Film Festival should be at the top of your list.
