Experience the flavours of Goa at artisanal bakeries and cafés that are revolutionising the food scene in the state.
A picturesque state located on the western coast of India, Goa has always been a popular tourist destination. It is known for its pristine beaches, rich history, and vibrant culture. Over the years, Goa has also become synonymous with its ever evolving food and beverage culture, which is a unique blend of Indian, Portuguese, and Konkani influences. Over the years, Goa's food scene has taken a new turn. In recent years, many artisanal bakeries and cafés have emerged, offering a taste of international cuisines and artisanal bread.
In simple terms, 'artisanal' refers to something that is made by hand or using traditional methods, often by skilled craftspeople. When it comes to food, artisanal products are typically crafted in small batches, using high-quality ingredients and traditional techniques. For instance, artisanal bread might be made using a slow fermentation process and hand-shaped by a skilled baker. The term 'artisanal' often implies a certain level of expertise, care, and attention to detail that goes into making the product. It may also mean a connection to the history and traditions of the craft.
I’ve always been fascinated by the culinary scene in different places. Recently, I had the pleasure of visiting Goa. While exploring the towns and cities here, I noticed a trend that caught my attention—the rise of artisanal bakeries and cafés offering a myriad of food and beverage options. Gone are the days when Goa was only famous for its seafood and local cuisine. The past decade has seen a surge of young entrepreneurs who are passionate about creating unique handcrafted bakery and café experiences. From quaint little cafés tucked away in alleys to sprawling bakeries in the heart of the city, the artisanal vibe in Goa has something for everyone.
My first stop was Casa Café; it was an experience to remember. As soon as I walked in, I was greeted by a warm and inviting atmosphere. The staff was friendly and the whole place had a delightful aroma of freshly brewed coffee. I had heard about their artisanal cappuccino made with organically grown South Indian cacao. I knew I had to try it. The barista carefully selected the cacao beans, roasted them to perfection, and ground them into a fine powder. Then he combined it with locally sourced milk and brewed espresso. The result—a smooth and velvety cappuccino with a rich chocolate flavour that lingered on my taste buds. But the coffee wasn't the only highlight of my visit. Casa Café prides itself on using organic and locally sourced ingredients to create its dishes. Its commitment to sustainability was evident in every aspect of the menu. I went there for breakfast, and had the chance to have the most wholesome meal of my life! The Brie Croissant Sandwiches were my favourite, and their Pumpkin Jam was heavenly. I had never tasted anything like it, and was initially quite apprehensive. But you know what they say, sometimes the best things in life are unexpected. As I enjoyed my food and coffee, I admired the cosy and charming decor of the café. The wooden furniture, potted plants, and colourful murals gave the place an elegant look. The overall ambience was peaceful and relaxing, making it the perfect spot to unwind after a busy day of exploring.
Got a sweet tooth? Then you cannot leave Goa without having the delectable desserts at German Bakery in Anjuna. You won't be disappointed with the Chocolate Croissant—the first thing I order at any bakery—or the Lemon Cake. They were both divine. Be sure to try their cheesecakes too. And if you're feeling brave, try the Jamaican Pancakes. They will steal your heart with their amazing taste and presentation. The café itself has a very peaceful ambience, offering a great escape from the party scene in Goa. It's the perfect sport for a laid-back evening. You can also take a walk by the beach once you are done gorging on their delicacies.
Café Al Fresco by Cantina Bodega is located in the courtyard of a gorgeous Portuguese villa, and offered a spectacular food and beverage spread. I visited the café on the last day of my trip and I couldn’t have asked for a better ending. I’m a breakfast person and never miss an opportunity to have one. I love places that offer it all day, Café Al Fresco being one of them. We ordered the Eggs in Purgatory. It came accompanied by cherry tomatoes and delicious sourdough toast. I also tried their Kombucha, which was not up to my taste, but is worth a try. The artisanal food scene in Goa is booming with bakeries and cafés popping up around every corner. I can't wait to go back and explore more such cafés and bakeries on my next trip.
