The journey begins in the vibrant city of Jammu, where we set off early in the morning to reach the charming city of Srinagar. The drive through the winding roads amidst lush green hills and the promise of more breathtaking vistas ahead fills us with much anticipation. After a few hours on the road, we arrive in the 'Paradise on Earth,' Srinagar. The serene Dal Lake welcomes us, adorned with colourful shikaras and houseboats. We take a leisurely shikara ride and immerse ourselves in the tranquillity of the surroundings. The Mughal gardens of Shalimar Bagh and Nishat Bagh treat us to captivating beauty, setting the tone for the adventure that lies ahead.
Our journey takes a thrilling turn as we head towards Sonamarg, the 'Meadow of Gold.' The verdant meadows, glistening streams, and snow-capped peaks create a picture-perfect setting. Moving ahead, we brace ourselves for the challenging Zoji La Pass, the gateway to Ladakh. The breathtaking views from the pass leave us spellbound. As we descend from the pass, we reach the historic town of Drass, known as the 'Gateway to Ladakh' and the second coldest inhabited place on Earth. Paying our respects at the Kargil War Memorial, we are reminded of the sacrifice of our brave soldiers during the Kargil War. The journey continues to Kargil, where we find comfort in its warm hospitality and indulge in local delicacies.
As we embark on the road once again, we encounter Lamayuru, a place that feels like stepping onto another planet with its moon-like landscapes. The ancient Lamayuru Monastery stands majestically against the surreal backdrop, and we find ourselves lost in time. Continuing our journey, we experience the mysterious phenomenon of Magnetic Hill, where our vehicle seems to move uphill on its own. It's an exhilarating experience. En route, the Alchi Monastery awaits with its ancient murals and peaceful ambience. A sense of spirituality envelops us as we explore this historical gem.
Finally, we reach the ultimate destination of our road trip - Leh. The capital of Ladakh, Leh, is a charming town set amidst the rugged mountains. As we wander through its narrow alleys and bustling markets, the distinct culture and warm smiles of the locals captivate us. We take a moment to acclimatize to the high altitude and enjoy the vibrant atmosphere of this Himalayan town. The Leh Palace stands tall, offering panoramic views of the town and the Stok Kangri range in the distance. The serene Shanti Stupa invites us to witness a mesmerizing sunset over the barren landscape, bringing a perfect end to an eventful day.
The adventure doesn't end in Leh! We continue our journey to the enchanting Nubra Valley. Crossing the world's highest motorable pass, Khardung La, we feel a sense of achievement. The landscape changes dramatically as we enter Nubra Valley - sand dunes, double-humped Bactrian camels, and lush green oases greet us. We explore Diskit Monastery, perched on a hill, and take a thrilling camel safari on the sand dunes. The tranquillity of the valley leaves us in awe, and we relish the serenity of the night amidst the Himalayas.
As we bid farewell to Nubra Valley, we set our sights on another breathtaking destination - Pangong Tso. The journey takes us through rugged terrains and remote areas. The first glimpse of the shimmering blue waters of Pangong Lake leaves us speechless. Stretching across India and Tibet, the lake changes colours throughout the day, offering a spectacle of nature's beauty. We camp by the lakeside under a starry sky, cherishing every moment of this surreal experience.
Leaving Pangong Tso behind, we head towards the lesser-known gem, Tso Moriri. The drive takes us through Changthang Wildlife Sanctuary, where we might spot wild animals like kiang (Tibetan wild ass) and marmots. The azure lake of Tso Moriri surrounded by snow-capped mountains and vast meadows is a serene oasis in the barren landscape. We immerse ourselves in the tranquillity of this secluded paradise and reflect on the wonders of nature.
As our road trip nears its end, we bid farewell to Tso Moriri and begin our journey back to Leh. En route, we visit the famous Hemis Monastery, renowned for its annual Hemis Festival and its rich cultural heritage.
