If you're someone who finds the allure of green forests and hills more attractive than snowscapes, then Ooty might be the perfect place for you. Located in Tamil Nadu, Ooty is a charming hill station that is known for its cool climate, scenic beauty, and expansive tea estates. Its peaceful surroundings offer a welcome respite from the chaos of city life. During my visit to Ooty, I went on a tour of its tea estates and sampled some exotic teas. The drive to these estates is very scenic. I also enjoyed taking short hikes in the rolling hills of Ooty. Don't miss a chance to watch the sunset in Ooty—they are gorgeous. It's an experience you are unlikely to forget. If you love nature walks, head to Sims Park to admire the diversity of colourful flower beds. And if there are nature lovers in your family, the stunning Pykara and Avalanche Falls are worth a visit. Pro tip: If anyone in your family is a bibliophile, Higginbotham Bookstore—the oldest bookstore in Ooty—is a must-visit.
Reflecting on where my love for family travel began, there is no denying that the city of Jaipur holds a special place in my heart. Being a history buff, it is no wonder that I am drawn to the city's royal legacy. Jaipur is a city that stands at the cusp of contemporary culture and its grandiose past. It allows you to step into a bygone era while enjoying the comforts of a modern city. Also known as the 'Pink City', Jaipur was once home to the royal dynasties that ruled over the princely state of Rajasthan. Don't hesitate to ask the locals about the fascinating stories of kings and queens as well as te city's marvellous architecture and ingenious engineering! While in Jaipur, be sure to visit the sprawling Amber Fort, the iconic Hawa Mahal, Nahargarh Fort, Jal Mahal, and the photogenic Patrika Gate. For a wholesome shopping experience, check out the famous Chandpole Bazaar and Bapu Bazaar. Don't forget to try all the different street food offerings at Masala Chowk!
Why burn a hole in your pocket for a vacation in Europe when you can simply travel to Coorg? Located in Karnataka, Coorg is famous for its scenic beauty and diverse flora and fauna, which has earned it the moniker, 'Scotland of India'. It is the perfect place to enjoy quiet evening walks with your family. The best thing about Coorg is its pleasant weather, even during the hot summer months. However, it does experience heavy rains during the monsoons. Winters, on the other hand, are cool and chilly. But this is not all that Coorg has to offer. You can also enjoy various adventure sports, such as rafting, trekking, and overnight camping. You can go hiking to Abbey Falls or experience a jungle safari at the Nagarhole National Park—both of which will leave you with great holiday memories.
I haven't been to Darjeeling, but from what I have heard it's a superb choice for a family holiday. Situated at an elevation of around 7,000 ft above sea level, Darjeeling is a charming hill town in West Bengal. Popularly known as the 'Queen of the Hills', Darjeeling is on my bucket list, especially since Shimla has become too touristy. It is no surprise that the most exciting thing to do in Darjeeling is to hop aboard the enchanting Darjeeling-Himalayan Railway, which is locally known as the Toy Train. Billed as the most iconic experience in Darjeeling, this historic toy train ride is a great way to soak in the beauty of the hill town. Additionally, visiting the vast tea plantations in Darjeeling is a unique experience for anyone who loves tea.
Previously known as Alleppey, Alappuzha is a district in Kerala. If you don't fancy going on treks or road trips but still wish to enjoy scenic beauty, then Alappuzha is the perfect destination. This backwater wonder has a network of canals, lakes, beaches and long stretches of paddy fields, and is famous for its houseboats. It is blessed with moderate weather, perfect for a visit during winter vacations. During our visit to Alappuzha, we rented a houseboat and spent time listening to the quiet lapping of water and birdsong. We played games and chatted for long hours. If you visit Alappuzha in the winter, you might get to enjoy its many beach festivals.
Nainital was the first place I visited for leisure travel, and it turned out to be one of the best choices I ever made. Surrounded by seven hills and dotted with beautiful lakes, this picturesque town is an excellent destination for North-Indian families who want to go on a holiday but are wary of going too far. Nainital is comparatively easier to access from most major North Indian cities. Nainital offers many adventure activities, such as trekking, kayaking, and rafting. If adventure is not your cup of tea, you can enjoy the calm waters from inside a luxurious gondola. You can also visit the Nainital Boat House Club for a boat ride on the placid Naini Lake.
The capital city of Meghalaya, Shillong is one of the most-visited cities in the Northeast. It is home to quiet neighbourhoods, thriving downtown areas, winding valleys, and majestic waterfalls. Shillong has a rich Colonial past and the best way to learn all about it is by taking the Shillong Heritage Walk. It's truly an enlightening experience that offers a deep insight into the fascinating history of the city. During my visit, I also explored the sprawling Golf Links, the picturesque Ward's Lake, Phan Nonglait Park, and Don Bosco Museum. However, no visit to Shillong is complete without a trip to the stunning Umiam Lake and a picnic at India Orchidarium. Don't leave Shillong until you've tried the mouthwatering Garo-Khasi delicacies. Finally, if you love waterfalls and trekking, check out the mesmerising Elephant Falls.
This list is only the tip of the iceberg of the many wonderful places and experiences that await to be discovered across India. I hope this list of the best places to travel in India for a family vacation will help you plan your next trip. Now that you are all set, I have one final piece of advice—make the most of your family vacation by doing everything you can to create a memorable experience!
