An unforgettable adventure through the Western Ghats of Kerala, where misty hills, tea gardens, and wildlife encounters await!
As an avid traveller, I have always found Kerala to be an attractive destination. I have been there before, yet I was more than glad to tag on with some friend when they were going there. The itinerary was specifically focussed on the Western Ghats of Kerala and I wouldn’t miss the lush green hills, cascading waterfalls, and diverse wildlife of the region for anything in the world.

Our exciting journey to the most scenic spots in the Western Ghats commenced at the Kochi Domestic Airport. As our plane descended into Kochi, we were already captivated by the sight of the azure Arabian Sea and the lush coastline. Stepping out of the airport, we were greeted with warm tropical air and friendly smiles. Our first stop was Fort Kochi, a charming neighbourhood steeped in history. Strolling through its narrow streets, we encountered ancient churches, Dutch mansions, and the iconic Chinese fishing nets. The cultural richness of the place was simply captivating. To end the day on a high note, we witnessed a mesmerizing Kathakali performance, an ancient traditional dance form of Kerala.
Leaving the coastal charm behind, we headed towards Munnar, a magical hill station nestled amidst tea plantations and misty valleys. The winding roads took us through breathtaking landscapes, as if painted by an artist's brush. En route, we stopped at a tea museum and learnt about the tea-making process. The aroma of freshly brewed tea leaves filled the air. After settling into our cozy accommodation, we took a leisurely walk through the manicured tea gardens and soaked in the serene ambience, sipping on some delightful chai.
On the next day, we embarked on a thrilling adventure to Kolukkumalai, the highest tea estate in the world. Our jeep ride took us up the narrow, rugged terrain, which offered panoramic views of the valleys below. At the top, by the golden sun pierced through a sea of clouds, creating a surreal spectacle. We were humbled by the hard work of the tea pickers and the stunning beauty of this place. By the evening, we returned to our accommodation in Munnar.
We ventured next, into the wilderness. The Chinnar Wildlife Sanctuary awaited us with its diverse flora and fauna. We spotted elusive animals like langurs, deers, and elephants. The sanctuary is a haven for birdwatchers too, replete with several migratory and native species. We were reminded of the importance of preservation of these delicate ecosystems and the fascinating creatures that live in it.
Our journey took us to Calvary Mount next. This is a lesser-known gem in the Western Ghats. Perched at a higher altitude, the views from here were simply breathtaking. The tranquil atmosphere was perfect for self-reflection and introspection. The Calvary Mount Church, dating back to the 19th century, exuded an old-world charm, and the surrounding valleys added a touch of mysticism. This was a place where one could find solace amidst nature's bounty.
Next on our list was Vagamon, a hill station wrapped in emerald meadows and lush pine forests. Here, we felt as though we were stepping into a dream as we explored the Vagamon Kurisumala, a revered Christian pilgrimage centre. The meandering roads led us to pristine lakes and cascading waterfalls, where the sweet scent of eucalyptus filled the air. The tranquil beauty of Vagamon left us in awe of Mother Nature's wonders.
We had another encounter with the wild at Thekkady where the famed Periyar National Park, beckoned us for a thrilling boat safari on Periyar Lake. As we cruised along, we spotted herds of elephants bathing on the banks, deer grazing, and colourful birds fluttering around. The lush greenery and the sight of these magnificent animals left us humbled and grateful for the conservation efforts in place.
Our journey through the Western Ghats wouldn't have been complete without a houseboat experience in Alleppey. We boarded a traditional Kettuvallam and drifted through the serene backwaters, passing by paddy fields and quaint villages. The tranquil rhythm of the water and the sunset on the horizon created an ambience of unparalleled peace and tranquillity.
As our tour of the Western Ghats came to an end, we headed back to Kochi. The memories of this incredible journey would remain etched in our hearts forever. Kerala's Western Ghats were generous with their beauty, and we left with a sense of gratitude for the experiences we had gathered. As we boarded our flight from Kochi domestic airport, we couldn’t help but feel transformed by this encounter with nature's wonders. The Western Ghats of Kerala have gifted us with a treasure trove of memories, each a testament to the mesmerizing beauty and rich biodiversity of this enchanting region. Until next time, Western Ghats!
