Ulhasnagar and the thrill of a Sindhi street food tour

In between busy days, find time to enjoy local food that reminds you of childhood memories

Snacking is a way of life for Sindhis. Their snacks are known for their beautiful blend of taste and nutrition. Sindhi food is synonymous with lip-smacking street food. Ulhasnagar is an excellent place to explore Sindhi street food, courtesy of my college friends. I am from a Sindhi-owned engineering college, so I have grown up gorging on yummy Sindhi tiffins. It must come as no surprise that I was longing to go on the true-blue Sindhi culinary trail, and Ulhasnagar was just the right place.

During the partition, a huge Sindhi population migrated from Pakistan and settled here. Since then it has been a Sindhi hotspot. And so I set out with my gang of Sindhi friends to this suburb. We wanted to pay a home visit to my pal. But my main agenda was to savour the best of Sindhi local delicacies.

Start the day with Dal Pakwan

We left early on a Saturday morning from Dadar Station and arrived at Ulhasnagar around mid-morning. Famished from the two hours long bumpy train ride, the only thing on our minds was a hearty breakfast, local style. We looked no further than the famous Doli Nasta House, right at Station Road. It is known for curating the most delicious Dal Pakwan ever.

Dal Pakwan is a really tasty and healthy way to start the day for it is full of protein and it brings the best of pulses, traditionally horse gram. Additionally, ours also had a mix of other yummy pulses. A crispy flatbread was served as the base, and the hot mix of Dal was poured onto it, to create a sizzling flavour. Added to that was a dose of sweet and savoury chutneys, onions, coriander, and a dash of lemon.

While the eatery is open from 7 am till almost 11 pm, account for the waiting time due to perpetually busy crowds flocking it.

Chole Patties for an afternoon snack

After stuffing myself with the yummy breakfast, next on my mind was to have a typical local street food. So, we headed straight to Kishore Patties wala, a regular roadside stall. But don't let the appearance fool you, for before we knew it, long queues started forming for a mouthful of delicious chole patties.

We also stood in line, waiting to dig into the crispy fried potato patties, laced with dollops of boiled chickpeas, and garnished with yummy green chutney. As soon as I got my first bite, I understood the reason for its popularity. The patty was crispy on the outside soft and mushy on the inside. The mix of spice and sweetness tantalised my taste buds. While my tummy was full my heart wanted more. So we decided to pack some for home.

Delicious Sindhi Curry for lunch

While we were totally packed in the tummy, the mind and heart craved more. That was anyway not a day to watch my calories. We started searching for a restaurant to have lunch. We decided to have simple Sindhi Curry with plain rice.

As the dish was served, the aromatic fragrance of Sindhi spices complementing the Basmati ki khushbu was like coming back home to mom’s love. The curry is usually cooked in chickpea flour making a wholesome meal. The simple ambience and great food gave us a chance to sit back, relax and chat about the old college days. What a way to ring in nostalgia! Good meals surely bring out an element of camaraderie, like none other.

Evening snacks with Remixed Chat

After a food-packed first half, we took a break, a much-needed pause to digest and be back with a bang for a second round. Having refreshed and re-energised, we arrived at Gol Maiden. The chat-lover in me did a happy dance. I was craving this ultimate street food for a long time. Nothing can beat the joy of dipping pani puris into spicy, savoury-flavoured water, and the crackle as it bursts inside your mouth.

A visit to the Jai Mata Di called for a chat indulgence with a superb twist. I was surprised to see a blend of chat with butter, in their signature butter papdi chat. What a perfect evening snack! Deep-fried papdis, topped with boiled mashed potato, sev, and chutneys, made for the perfect bite-sized delights. The oomph factor was that it was served chilled, creating a culinary sensation like no other.

Food Memorabilia

I wanted to take some Sindhi memorabilia for my family. My friend surprised me with an interesting place. Tikamdas Dalwalaa, a shop more than 30 years old, which continues to attract crowds, because of their sheer varieties of Farsan savouries.

Farsans are salty snacks served with tea in Sindhi households. There were a lot of dry options as well. I also had some upcoming travels planned, and so I picked up quite a few packets of interesting-looking farsaans such as dal moth and masala daal sev.

The cherry on top was a bag of Singhar ji Mithai to satiate my sweet-tooth family members. And so, my Sindhi snack-a-thon ended with a bagful of goodies as a memo of this trip.

Sweet endings and laughter

After food-hopping in the town, we settled for the night at my friend's place. What better way to experience true-blue Sindhi hospitality than with homemade meals? We obviously did not have the appetite for a full meal, so a refreshing drink of Gulan Jo Sharbat served as a good quencher with a crunchy homemade Kheecha papad. We got comfortable and conversations flowed along with the sharbat.

What a day it was, not just for the tastebuds but also for my heart and soul. Delighting myself with good food helped me break away from the humdrum of daily life and rediscover the goodness in small daily things.
