From puddings and cookies to gelato, every meal in New York City beckons you to indulge in desserts without fail.
The true splendour of chocolate eluded me until the moment I found myself queuing for approximately three hours, all in pursuit of a frozen hot chocolate in the heart of New York City. I had first seen the iconic Frrroozen Hot Chocolate in a rom-com called Serendipity. John Cusack and Kate Beckinsale enjoyed the decadent drink at a cafe called Serendipity 3. On my first-ever trip to the Big Apple, I decided to explore the city's sweet indulgences. My exploration commenced at Serendipity 3, where I gave in to the allure of their iconic offering—a beverage that constituted a full-fledged meal on its own. To this day, I dream about the aftertaste of its chocolate shavings and whipped cream. This was just the beginning. The dessert scene in New York City is wild, mixed with cakes, ice-creams, cookies, pies, and a world that Willy Wonka himself would revel in. Lucky for me, my time in the city was distributed among some of the best spots that would satisfy any sweet tooth.
A local New Yorker said that if I enjoyed familiar, classic, homely flavours, I was bound to love Christina Tosi’s Milk Bar. This is a dessert lovers' paradise with multiple bakeries across the city and a flagship store in the NoMad district. Tosi’s creations are childhood memories combined with sugar and sprinkles. There was an entire section on birthday cakes that included cake and truffles, each made with vanilla, funfetti, and nostalgia. The Cereal Milk Soft Serve tasted exactly like its name, but the real winner was its Milk Bar Pie (the Crack Pie), which was gooey and buttery. A trip to New York City is incomplete without a visit to Milk Bar.
Navigating from Grand Central Station, I discovered Magnolia Bakery, and it swiftly became a regular stop whenever I found myself in the area. Magnolia Bakery traces its origin back to 1996 in West Village. Renowned for its signature red velvet cupcakes and delectable banana pudding, the establishment has continued to maintain its allure across the years. The bakery has eight stores in the Big Apple, and I have visited each of them. I haven’t ever left without a tub of its pudding, pistachio cupcakes, and a slice of cake. One of my cherished rituals was heading to the Rockefeller Centre branch after loading up on these sweet delights, and taking a leisurely walk to Central Park via 6th Ave, all the while admiring the towering glass buildings that surrounded me.
You can never go wrong with an old-fashioned soft-serve. Big Gay Ice Cream in East Village has mastered the art of elevating simple ice cream into something magical. My first visit to the establishment was a whirlwind of emotions, as it encompassed not just a haven of delectable treats, but also embodied the spirit of LGBTQ+ advocacy. From the captivating unicorn adorning the store window to the iconic "Salty Pimp" ice cream cone, and the delightfully named ice cream sandwiches called American Globs, the experience felt remarkably close to perfection. Big Gay has another store in West Village with similar colourful interiors. For those who, like me, enjoy inventive ice cream creations, a visit to Big Gay Ice Cream is an absolute must.
My first-ever trip to Ferrara Bakery in New York City's Little Italy neighbourhood was on a cold winter morning. I woke up with a craving for sweet ricotta cheese and pastry, and this iconic Italian bakery came to mind. Ferrara was established in 1892 by Enrico Scoppa and Antonio Ferrara, and has been serving up traditional Italian pastries ever since. After a subway ride to Canal St. and a quick brisk walk in the snow, I entered Ferrara. I was welcomed by the warm smell of a traditional bakery. From their extensive menu, I chose their traditional ricotta, chocolate-dipped, and pistachio cannoli. Their classic Italian desserts like rum-soaked tiramisu, creamy panna cotta, and luscious cheesecake are highly recommended too. But my heart rested on the crisp pastry shells of their cannoli along with a steaming cup of espresso.
I am the greatest fan of unique desserts, so when I first heard about cronuts, I knew I had to try it. A trip to New York City needs a day in Soho where one must devour the famous Dominique Ansel Bakery Cronut. This half-croissant, half-doughnut has a buttery and flaky texture with flavoured cream, topped with a perfect glaze and sprinkles. Over the years, this innovative bakery has come up with exciting things like a Cookie Shot, Frozen S’mores, Blossoming Hot Chocolate, and more. While the original store opened in Soho, I love the one in Flatiron since it is right by Madison Square Park. A cronut in hand and a walk around the park made for a perfect New York evening. New York City has a plethora of options for sugar lovers. Nooks and corners are filled with charming bakeries, ice cream shops, cookie stations, and a lot more. Whether you're savouring chocolate pizzas and indulgent hot chocolates at Max Brenner Chocolate Bar on Union Square, relishing the comforting treats from Insomnia Cookies, or experiencing the unique olive oil gelato at L’Arte del Gelato, the city's dessert landscape consistently delivers unforgettable experiences. For your next trip, leave some room after every meal for a lick, bite, sip, or swirl of these iconic New York City desserts.
