Discover the historical forts of Karnataka over a seven-day road-trip
Stories fascinate me. Especially if they are true stories. That’s perhaps why I have passion for history. Though I did not pursue the subject academically as I did not consider is a viable career option, my interest in it never waned. So when my friends planned a seven-day road trip of Karnataka, I suggested we see all the historical places. Some of them weren’t hard to convince, but some others needed a bit of persuasion. We made an elaborate plan mapping a route connecting some of the top forts of Karnataka, and soon enough we were ready to hit the road, with our seatbelts fastened and foot on the accelerator.

Our first destination was the Bangalore Fort which was set in the busy parts of Bangalore. We explored the massive granite walls and the intricate architecture of this 16th-century marvel. We could not have fathomed the rich history it holds. The fort's highlight is the Tipu Sultan Summer Palace, where we are transported back in time to the era of the Mysore Kingdom.
LLeaving the big city noises of Bangalore behind, we journeyed towards Chitradurga Fort, on the top of a hill and contrastingly quiet. This colossal fort, also known as the "Fortress of Seven Rounds", left us in awe of its strategic design and engineering brilliance. As we climbed the steep steps and wandered through its labyrinthine corridors, we could feel the echoes of history reverberating through the ancient stones. The panoramic views from the fort's vantage points made every step worthwhile.
We arrived next at the Ballari Fort. Situated amidst the breathtaking landscape of the Deccan Plateau, this majestic fort offers a perfect blend of history and natural beauty. From its imposing entrance gates to the magnificent gardens within, the fort captivates us at every turn. As the evening sun painted the sky with hues of gold, we took a leisurely stroll along the fort's ramparts, soaking in the mesmerizing views of the surrounding valley.
Next on our trip, we reached Hampi, which is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and is historically known to be the capital of the Vijayanagara Empire. Hampi is not primarily known for its fortifications, but its ruins offer glimpses into the grandeur and opulence of the bygone era. Amidst the sprawling archaeological site lay the remnants of fortifications, watchtowers, and defensive walls that once protected this magnificent city. As we wandered through the ruins, we couldn't help but imagine its glorious past.
We ventured next to the Badami, where the clifftop fort awaited carved into the rugged sandstone cliffs awaited us. The Badami Fort stands as a testament to the Chalukya dynasty's architectural prowess. As we climbed the steep steps to reach the fort, we were rewarded with sweeping views, including the Agastya Lake and the ancient cave temples that dot the landscape. The fort's intricate carvings and ornate sculptures showcase the artistic brilliance of its creators, leaving us spellbound.
Our road trip took us to Bijapur next. The grand Bijapur Fort beckoned us with its imposing gates and majestic structures. Built by the Adil Shahi dynasty, this fort epitomizes the splendour of Islamic architecture. As we explored its vast expanse, we marvelled at the intricate artwork, massive domes, and towering minarets. The pièce de résistance here is the iconic Gol Gumbaz, a mausoleum that is said to be the second-largest dome in the world. We were left awestruck by its sheer size and architectural brilliance.
The penultimate site on our itinerary was the Gulbarga Fort. Also known as the Kalburgi Fort, it stands as a formidable structure built during the reign of the Bahmani dynasty. As we stepped into the fort's premises, we were greeted by its strong bastions, imposing gateways, and intricate carvings. The architecture embodies both Islamic and Hindu styles, reflective of the influence of the time. As we walked and explored its massive walls and interconnected structures, the grandeur of the structure made a lasting impression. The sheer effort and time it must have taken to build it was mind-boggling.
The final destination on our road trip was the Basavakalyan Fort. Historically significant as the capital of the Kalyani Chalukya dynasty, it showcases the architectural excellence of the times. The magnificent gateways are adorned with intricate carvings and sculptures depicting mythological tales. The fort's ornate temples, such as the Basaveshwara Temple and the Kamal Basadi, seemed to whisper stories of a glorious past. As the sun set, casting a warm golden glow over the ancient stones, we took a moment to absorb the tranquillity and appreciate the beauty of this hidden gem.
