Built between 1336 and 1646 AD, the monuments in Hampi appear to be arranged in an asymmetrical pattern, where the lush greenery, the pristine blue waters of river Tungabhadra, rocky hills, and broad plains provide a perfect canvas. So rich is its cultural heritage that the Archaeological Survey of India continues excavations in Hampi in search of artefacts and temples.
There are over 1,600 structures that cover an area of over 41 square kilometres, including castles, riverfronts, kings and spiritual clusters, markets, shrines, and palaces. The architectural style of the urban royal is seen in the domed halls, mandapas, memorial edifices, gateways, check posts, barns, and water structures.

As I approached the sacred Virupaksha Temple in Hampi, a palpable sense of spirituality engulfed me. Dedicated to Lord Shiva, this majestic temple stands as a testament to Hampi's rich heritage.
The intricate carvings on its walls depict mythological tales, while the towering gopuram (entrance tower) leaves you in awe. Venture further inside, and you'll witness a stunning courtyard adorned with pillared halls and ancient shrines. Don't forget to seek blessings from the temple's resident elephant, Lakshmi—a unique experience that brings good fortune.
Prepare to be mesmerised as you step foot into the magnificent Vittala Temple in Hampi. Known for its exceptional architecture and the iconic Stone Chariot, this temple is an architectural masterpiece.
As I explored its sprawling complex, I was enthralled by the musical pillars that produce distinct musical notes when struck gently. It's as if the stones themselves are singing a symphony of the past. The stables showcase the empire's love and admiration for these gentle giants. Exploring the chambers, I could almost envision the regal elephants adorned with colourful fabrics, waiting to be mounted by the kings and queens for their royal processions.
One step into the Queen's Bath, and I was transported into the lap of royal luxury. This elegant structure served as a private bathing complex for the queens of the Vijayanagara Empire.
The bath features a large rectangular pool surrounded by arched corridors and balconies, offering a tranquil oasis for relaxation and rejuvenation. The intricate carvings on the walls and the water channels that ensured a constant flow of freshwater showcased the empire's commitment to opulence and comfort.
For breathtaking views of Hampi's sprawling ruins, Hemakuta Hill is the place to be. As I climbed the gently sloping hill, I was rewarded with a panoramic vista that took my breath away.
From atop the hill, the surreal landscape unfolded before my eyes, revealing the remnants of ancient temples, boulders strewn across the terrain, and the meandering Tungabhadra River in the distance. Exploring the riverside ruins of Hampi allowed me to witness the remnants of a once-thriving marketplace and trading hub. As I walked along the banks of the Tungabhadra River, I encountered various stone structures, including old pavilions and market complexes.
The riverside area offered a serene escape from the bustling city, with the gentle sound of the flowing river providing a soothing backdrop. It was a tranquil spot where I could sit and reflect, imagining the vibrant commercial activities that once took place in this very location.
The Achyutaraya Temple in Hampi, dedicated to Lord Tiruvengalanatha (an incarnation of Lord Vishnu), showcases a unique blend of architectural styles. The temple's main highlight is its massive stone chariot, reminiscent of the iconic chariot at the Vittala Temple.
