Step into the past and witness the magnificence of Hampi's ancient ruins
Hampi, home to the ruins of the 14th-century Hindu Kingdom of Vijayanagara, is littered with granite rocks formed under the earth’s surface billions of years ago.
Structures in Hampi stand tall despite being withered by rain, sun, and wind as it symbolises the old civilisation. Built between 1336 and 1646 AD, the monuments in Hampi appear to be arranged in an asymmetrical pattern, where the lush greenery, the pristine blue waters of river Tungabhadra, rocky hills, and broad plains provide a perfect canvas. So rich is its cultural heritage that the Archaeological Survey of India continues excavations in Hampi in search of artefacts and temples.
There are over 1,600 structures that cover an area of over 41 square kilometres, including castles, riverfronts, kings and spiritual clusters, markets, shrines, and palaces. The architectural style of the urban royal is seen in the domed halls, mandapas, memorial edifices, gateways, check posts, barns, and water structures.
Recently, I embarked on a remarkable journey to this place where history comes alive amid captivating ruins and awe-inspiring monuments. Join me as I recount my personal experiences and share intriguing trivia about this captivating destination that will leave you craving an adventure of your own.
