Winter Wonderland the Best Places in North India for a White Christmas

Get ready for an adventure in the best destinations across North India to celebrate a magical white Christmas.

I hail from a place where there is technically no winter – it is a foreign concept. Therefore, December-end would always be sunny, with no snow to shovel and no cold to ward off with a crackling fire. However, in the last few years, I have discovered the joy of Christmas anew, with places in India where one can experience illuminated churches and pine trees covered in fluffy snow. In the destinations I have mentioned below, you can fulfil your dream of waking up to snow capped-mountains, sipping hot cocoa, and indulging in skiing and sledging to your heart's content. So, come with me to the northern parts of India, where the glorious Himalayas and a marvellous white Christmas await you!

Table of Contents:

  • Gulmarg, Jammu and Kashmir
  • Auli, Uttarakhand
  • Manali, Himachal Pradesh
  • Shimla, Himachal Pradesh
  • Khajjiar, Himachal Pradesh

Gulmarg, Jammu and Kashmir

Anybody will tell you that Gulmarg, located at an elevation of 2,650 m in Baramulla, Jammu and Kashmir, is one of the most scenic places in India. However, I want to add that it's also one of the finest places for a white Christmas. You see, Gulmarg is blessed with snow-covered meadows, evergreen forests, and lofty peaks of the Himalayas. On Christmas Eve, the church atop the hill is decorated with festive lights. The hotels and resorts here adorn the alpine trees with twinkling lights, adding to the magic in the atmosphere.

After enjoying a quaint Christmas party, I visited St. Mary’s Church and soaked in the peaceful atmosphere of this magical place. Later, I hopped on the Gulmarg Gondola cable car to visit Maharani Temple, where the view is breathtaking. How to reach: Opt for a train ride to Jammu, then take a bus from there. Gulmarg is around 250 km from Jammu. You can also book a flight to Srinagar. The distance between Srinagar and Gulmarg is around 50 km.

Auli, Uttarakhand

Situated in Uttarakhand, Auli – if you squint just enough – looks like Hogwarts from the Harry Potter movies. Blanketed in snow, Auli is a popular skiing destination. It is surrounded by oak and pine forests, offering some of the most incredible trekking trails. For me, the highlight of Auli is its igloo-shaped tents, where one can stay and cook their meals. You can begin your day with skiing, paragliding, or taking the coveted cable car ride. When you're feeling especially exploratory, you can trek to Gorson Bugyal, visit the Nanda Devi temple, or take a stroll in the Valley of Flowers National Park. How to reach: Get on a train to Haridwar from Delhi, then opt for a bus or shared car to reach Joshimath. Auli is only 11 km from Joshimath.

Manali, Himachal Pradesh

I have visited many snowy destinations, but Manali continues to be my first love. The gorgeous slopes of Manali covered with 14-inch-thick snow is a picturesque sight you will never forget! The city is a treasure trove of hidden treks and waterfalls. You can admire the magnificent views of the Dhauladhar ranges, ride a helicopter, rent a snow-scooter at the Solang Valley, and indulge in skiing, zorbing, paragliding, and horse riding. As Christmas approaches, hotels in Manali host elaborate parties, replete with beautiful Christmas trees and snowmen, delicious wine and rum cakes, and traditional Himachal music that will make your day. How to reach: It's an overnight bus journey from Delhi to Manali.

Shimla, Himachal Pradesh

There is a reason why Shimla is known as the Queen of Hills – it is one of the best places to experience snowfall in India. Situated at a height of 2,200 m, this town's beauty is unparalleled. During my visit, my friends and I partook in ice skating, golfing, paragliding, and mountain biking here. If you are a shopaholic like me, be sure to explore the markets of the snow-laden Mall Road. Shimla is also home to numerous chapels and churches, which add to the festive atmosphere. How to reach: You can either take a bus or train to Kalka. You can also take the toy train from Kalka to Shimla for a fun journey.

Khajjiar, Himachal Pradesh

Another scenic town in Himachal Pradesh that is worth a visit is Khajjiar, known as the mini-Switzerland of India. Its snow-covered meadows surrounded by majestic mountains offer a breathtaking view. Whether you want to soak in the serenity of the Himalayas or paraglide to your heart's content, Khajjiar has something for everyone. How to reach: You can take a train from Delhi to Pathankot, then hop aboard a bus heading to Dalhousie. Take another bus from Dalhousie to Khajjiar.

Kufri, Himachal Pradesh

Another prominent destination that I visited straight after my Shimla tour was the hill town of Kufri, which lies just 20 km away. Famous for its ski slopes, Kufri Zoo, and various trekking points, it is the perfect place to indulge in winter activities. Make sure you also explore Mahasu Peak and Fagu Valley while you are here. How to reach: You can reach Shimla by train, and then take a bus or a shared car to reach Kufri.

Ladakh

The world’s coldest desert, Ladakh, is a winter wonderland like no other, with rugged mountains, whitewashed stupas, winding roads, stunning gompas, and vibrant cultural life. If you are craving a quaint Christmas celebration, Ladakh is the perfect getaway for you. However, be warned that this place gets extremely cold. Nevertheless, the warmth of melodious Christmas carols will help ward off some of it! If you are an adventure-lover, you should not miss the opportunity to bike across the mountains, take the Chadar trek, or visit Chang La Pass. How to reach: The best way to reach Ladakh is via road. You can go on a bike trip or fly to the nearest airport in Leh.

Tawang, Arunachal Pradesh

Renowned for its sacred Buddhist monasteries, Tawang is a gem of Northeast India. Located at an altitude of around 3,050 m, this comparatively unexplored destination in Arunachal Pradesh will completely mesmerise you. If it's your first time in Tawang, I recommend trekking to the gorgeous peaks, meditating at the Taktsang Gompa, rafting in Kameng river, and shopping for souvenirs at the Tibetan Market. For a local culinary experience, be sure to savour some thukpa and momos at the eateries here. How to reach: Take a train to Rangapara, which is 390 km from Tawang.

Lava, West Bengal

For a peaceful Christmas vacation, Lava, in West Bengal, is an offbeat destination that I'd totally recommend. Situated on a hilltop in the Kalimpong district, this quiet hamlet is the best place to witness snow and enjoy nature. Lava is home to many Buddhist monasteries that only add to the tranquil atmosphere. You can also trek to the Neora National Park and spend some time bird-watching. How to Reach: Book a direct flight to Siliguri, which is 117 km from Lava. Then, take a cab to reach Lava.

Kheerganga, Himachal Pradesh

If you are planning to celebrate a white Christmas while indulging in some adventure, book your next escapade for Kheerganga. Kheerganga is famous for its trek which passes through the heartlands of Himachal Pradesh, Parvati Valley, and a few hamlets. Starting in Barshaini, Kheerganga trek is the ultimate package for adventure lovers. Although I believe trekking through Kheerganga's vast landscapes is not a piece of cake, it is one that's worth the challenge!

How to reach: Although Barshaini is well connected by road, it is recommended you book a flight to Bhuntar, which is 35 km away. Once you reach Barshaini, your trek to Kheerganga begins. With adventure, natural beauty, and tranquillity, these hill stations in North India make for a perfect choice to experience a unique winter wonderland during Christmas. So, pack your bags and get ready for an enchanting snowy Christmas!
