Nahan: The charming old-fashioned town!

What’s it all about?

Nahan is a cute little whimsical town lying south-east of Shimla in the beautiful state of Himachal Pradesh. Lying in the lap of Shivalik range, this town is one of the best-off beat destinations to explore near Delhi. Since it's a hill-station, the weather remains pleasant throughout, with an occasional downpour making the weather perfect all through the year.

Whether you are looking for some soul-searching or a romantic escapade, you can think of Nahan for next holiday. It offers exquisite mountain and valley views and deep jungles to be explored. There are quite a few spots from where you can admire the beauty of mother nature, right from Renuka Lake and Rani Tal to Jammu Peak. If you're a religious person, you can pay a visit to the Trilokar Temple or stroll down Mall Road in the evening, taking in the hilly breeze and doing some exciting shopping. You can easily spend an entire day at the Renuka Wildlife Sanctuary and engage in calming activities such as boating or camping.

How to reach: The nearest railway station to reach Nahan is Kalka and you can easily take a train from Delhi to here, followed by a short cab ride. You may explore our Adani One app to know more about train, bus and flight bookings here.

Where to stay: If visiting Nahan, Grand View Resort is a fine ensemble of Indian and western styles, offering a great combination of comfort and luxury. The resort is about 12 kms from Nahan and just 4 kms off Dehradun Shimla National Highway on Nahan Renuka Road. Another great option is The Sirmour Retreat, a luxury boutique resort, with a distinctive style! Nestled between tall pine trees on both sides, it offers the most scenic landscapes and mouth-watering food options.

Quick traveller trips: The pathway to this beautiful hill station is a bit rocky, so if you’re not used to hilly roads, it’s best to take a cab or train. It can get quite chilly during the nights so cover yourself up well, as you enjoy a tranquil night by the bonfire.

Chakrata: The mystical hill station

What’s it all about?

Surrounded by the sun-kissed Himalayas, Chakrata is the upcoming tourist destinations in Uttarakhand. Earlier known as Jaunsar Banwar, the town was created by Britishers as a summer retreat from the tropical weather of other parts of India. Chakrata is surrounded by gorgeous flora and fauna, and if you’re lucky you might spot a panther, basking in the winter sun. Whilst the summers are nice and sunny, the winters here offer their own charm. The scenic beauty of this place spell binds a lot of travellers, as they adore the cascading waterfalls and charming mountain passes.

One of the more popular attractions here is Tiger falls, adorning the deodar vegetation and overlooking the serene hills. If you love beautiful sunsets, you can spend an entire evening exploring the Chilmiri neck, which is also a famous spot for various activities such as trekking and rock climbing. If you’re an extrovert like me, you can even spend one evening, engaging with locals as you opt for a walking or cycling tour.

How to reach: The nearest railway station to Chakrata is Dehradun, just a 2-hour drive away from this mesmerising location. If you’re travelling from Delhi to Dehradun by train, I’d recommend you book well in advance to ensure you get a seat.

Where to stay: I stayed at the Waterfront Hill Resort during my travel to Chakrata last year, and the resort provides a luxurious experience with a touch of contemporary and has all modern amenities, alongside impeccable hospitality.

Pithoragarh: The eastern district of Uttarakhand surrounded by snow-capped mountains

What’s it all about?

Pithoragarh is a scenic hill station carved from the Almora district in Uttarakhand and offers a traveller’s paradise for all age groups. It’s often called ‘mini-Kashmir’ by the locals, and to be honest, that accurately describes the beauty of this place. Whilst it might not be one of the popular tourist destinations, it offers the gateway to the famous pilgrim spot Om Parvat on the holy river of Manasarovar and Kailash.

Surrounded by snow-capped mountains, specially the Panchachuli Peaks which overlook lush green Saur valley criss-crossed by meandering rivers and waterfalls cutting across forests, the town of Pithoragarh is a nature-lover's paradise. If you are into history, you could also spend some time here, a major centre of power during the reign of the Chand Kings in Kumaon and even today some remnants of that time exist, exploring the time of the Chand Kings in Kumaon, a few of whose remnants from that time, still exist.

How to reach: There is no direct connectivity to this unexplored beauty, however, you can travel from train to the nearest railway station, Tanakpur and then take a cab from there.

Where to stay: The town offers charming boutique stays for its travellers, right from the ‘Baanz cabin’ managed by the Silver Oak Place to Aagan Homestays.

Nahan, with its tranquil ambience and lush landscapes, invites introspection for those that need a break from the hum drums of the city. Chakrata, is another hidden gem, with an adventurous spirit that would leave an inedible mark on all thrill-seekers.

These unconventional havens near Delhi don’t just offer a weekend escape, they also present an opportunity to engage with like-minded souls and engage in profound encounters. Whether it's the ancient echoes of Pithoragarh, the serenity of Nahan’s verdant expanses, or Chakrata’s adrenaline-fueled escapades, each destination etches its own narrative, promising a New Year’s celebration like no other.
